Reath Silas

Characters

Reath Silas is a human Jedi who lives during the High Republic era, roughly two centuries before the Skywalker saga. Born and raised on Coruscant, he is a self-described bookworm who would rather lose himself in the Jedi archives than venture to the frontier. As a Padawan, he studies under Master Jora Malli - an eminent Council member who tries to nudge her pupil out of his comfort zone by assigning him to the new Starlight Beacon. Reath’s cautious, scholarly nature means he excels at Soresu lightsaber form, ancient-language translation and general lore, but he initially dreads real-world danger.

Fate thrusts that danger upon him in Claudia Gray’s novel “Into the Dark.” When the Great Hyperspace Disaster forces his transport, the cargo ship Vessel, to exit hyperspace, Reath joins fellow Jedi Cohmac Vitus, Orla Jareni and Dez Rydan in exploring an abandoned Amaxine Space Station. There he faces the carnivorous Drengir, battles the marauding Nihil and copes with the death of his master in the simultaneous Battle of Kur. Reassigned to Master Cohmac, he helps Quell further Drengir outbreaks, survives the sabotage of Starlight Beacon in “The Fallen Star,” and travels to Corellia in Daniel José Older’s “Midnight Horizon,” where prolonged combat and decisive leadership earn him elevation to the rank of Jedi Knight.

Throughout these trials Reath evolves from reluctant academic to well-rounded Jedi, without losing his curiosity or compassion. His arc embodies the High Republic’s central theme: that courage and knowledge are both lights in the darkness. By the time Starlight Beacon falls, the once-introverted Padawan has become a frontline defender of the Republic, a symbol that even the most bookish Jedi can rise to heroism when The Force - and the galaxy - call.
