Star Wars canon

Misc

Star Wars is a vast universe encompassing a rich tapestry of films, television series, novels, comics, and other media. The canon – the official continuity that dictates how these stories fit together – has not been without its complications, leading to a restructuring of the expansive universe.

The canon was reorganized in 2014, when The Walt Disney+ Company acquired Lucasfilm. The original six films and the animated television series Star Wars: The Clone Wars were preserved in the canon, while the Expanded Universe (EU) – consisting of numerous novels, comics, and games – was rebranded as Star Wars Legends. This allowed Lucasfilm to chart a new course for future stories and forge a cohesive narrative that would not conflict with previous works.

Given this development, the canon can be divided into several key categories: films, television series, novels, and comics. The Skywalker Saga, comprising Episodes I through IX, forms the backbone of the narrative, while standalone films like Rogue One and Solo serve as supplementary stories exploring various aspects of the galaxy. The animated television series – Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and Star Wars Resistance – further flesh out the universe, diving into the lives of prominent characters and events, while Disney+ has ventured into live-action with the highly acclaimed series The Mandalorian.

Since 2014, a new line of novels has been released under the canon banner, starting with A New Dawn by John Jackson Miller. These books range from prequel era stories revolving around characters like Padmé Amidala, to sequel era exploration of characters such as Poe Dameron. There are also novels delving into entirely new territories, like the High Republic series, set centuries before The Phantom Menace.

In addition to the novels, the canon also includes a series of comics published by Marvel Comics since 2015. The comics mirror the depth of the novel range, spanning from the age of the High Republic up to the sequel era. These offer a mix of character-focused tales and grand, event-driven narratives featuring iconic characters, such as Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, and Doctor Aphra.

It's essential to note that not all Star Wars media are considered part of the canon. Video games, for instance, are generally considered non-canonical, with some exceptions such as the campaign mode of the game Star Wars Battlefront II. Other recent titles, like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, are also acknowledged as part of the canon

the Star Wars canon is an ever-evolving tapestry of interconnected stories weaving the tale of the galaxy far, far away. From the central films to the novels, comics, and television series, the canon covers a wide range of characters, locations, and events, ensuring that there is always more to discover in the universe of Star Wars.
