The Mandalorian is a live-action Star Wars television series created by Jon Favreau, which premiered on the streaming platform Disney++ in November 2019. Set in the Star Wars universe, the series takes place five years after the events of Return of the Jedi and twenty-five years before The Force Awakens. The show is the first of its kind, being the first live-action Star Wars television series and a significant departure from the main Star Wars saga, focusing on entirely new characters and storylines.

The Mandalorian follows the journey of a lone bounty hunter named Din Djarin, who operates in the outer reaches of the galaxy, far from the influence of the New Republic. He is part of the Mandalorian culture, a society of skilled warriors known for their iconic armor, code of honor, and their ability to use cutting-edge technology to their advantage. Early in the series, the Mandalorian is assigned to retrieve a mysterious Asset, later revealed to be a child of the same species as Yoda, the iconic Star Wars Jedi Master. The child, now dubbed "Grogu" and often referred to as "The Child" or "Baby Yoda" by fans, has a strong connection with the Force and quickly develops a close bond with the Mandalorian, who becomes his protector and surrogate father.

Throughout the series, Din Djarin and Grogu encounter a number of supporting characters that aid and challenge them in their quest. Among them are Cara Dune (played by Gina Carano), a former Rebel shock trooper; Greef Karga (played by Carl Weathers), an unscrupulous bounty hunter guild leader; and Moff Gideon (played by Giancarlo Esposito), a former Imperial officer and the series' main antagonist. Additionally, in later seasons, key characters from the broader Star Wars universe make appearances, such as Bo-Katan Kryze (played by Katee Sackhoff), a Mandalorian warrior from the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Ahsoka Tano (played by Rosario Dawson), a former Jedi Padawan.

The Mandalorian has been well received by both critics and fans of the Star Wars franchise. With a mix of captivating storytelling, classic Star Wars elements, and cutting-edge visual effects, the show has been credited with revitalizing the Star Wars brand for a new generation. The series also introduced new ideas and cultures within the Star Wars universe, further expanding upon its rich history and lore.

The Mandalorian has received numerous awards and nominations since its debut, including 15 Primetime Emmy Award nominations for its first season, winning seven of them. The show's visual effects, music, and costuming have also garnered praise, with composer Ludwig Göransson being lauded for his innovative score, which includes elements of both traditional and electronic sounds.

Following the success of the first two seasons, a third season of The Mandalorian is currently in development, with an expected release in late 2022. In addition to the continuation of the series, Disney+ has also announced multiple Star Wars spin-off series, including The Book of Boba Fett focusing on the iconic bounty hunter Boba Fett as well as Ahsoka, a series centered on Ahsoka Tano, a fan-favorite character from the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels.
