Master and Apprentice is a Star Wars novel written by Claudia Gray, published in 2019. The story takes place about eight years before the events of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, focusing on the relationship between Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his young Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi. The novel delves into their characters' backgrounds, explores the Jedi Code, and deepens the lore of the Star Wars galaxy.

In the novel, Qui-Gon is invited to join the Jedi Council but feels conflicted about accepting the position, since it would mean leaving Obi-Wan, who has not yet passed his Jedi Trials. While considering the offer, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are tasked with a mission to resolve a political dispute between the planetary government of Pijal and the powerful Czerka Corporation on the eve of a new hyperspace corridor opening.

Joining Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are the characters Rael Averros, another Jedi who was once trained by Qui-Gon's former Master, Dooku, and a new character, Pax Maripher, a skilled pilot and friend of Rael’s. Through their interactions, the novel not only highlights the unique bond between Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan but also shows the inner workings of Jedi mentoring and training.

One of the central themes in Master and Apprentice is the exploration of the Force, the Jedi Code, and the prophecies around a "Chosen One" who will bring balance to the Force. Qui-Gon's fascination with these prophecies leads him to believe that the opening of the hyperspace corridor is connected to one of the ancient Jedi prophecies.

Moreover, the novel delves into the beliefs and values that guide the Jedi Order, bringing focus to the rigid adherence to the Code and its repercussions on the relationship between a Master and a Padawan. This exploration culminates in the characters' growth, personal revelations, and different approaches to serving the light side of the Force.

As a prelude to the events of the Skywalker Saga, the novel weaves familiar elements and characters from the movies and other Star Wars stories. Notably, the novel showcases the beginnings of the close bond between Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon, which is further developed in The Phantom Menace and later influences Obi-Wan's mentoring of Anakin Skywalker.

Furthermore, Master and Apprentice provides insights into the relationship between Qui-Gon Jinn and Count Dooku, his former Master, who would later become the antagonist in the prequel films. This background information enlivens the characters and enhances the understanding of the story in the Star Wars galaxy.

Claudia Gray's Master and Apprentice can be seen as a compelling exploration of the Star Wars universe and its complex characters. Following the trials and tribulations of Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, the novel provides an invaluable insight into the Jedi Code, the Force, and the beginnings of the Skywalker Saga. With its rich narrative and captivating character development, Master and Apprentice is a must-read for any Star Wars fan.
