Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is a 2016 film directed by Gareth Edwards, and is the first stand-alone installment in the Star Wars Anthology series. Set immediately before the events of the original 1977 Star Wars film, now known as A New Hope, Rogue One tells the story of a group of Rebels working to steal the plans for the Death Star, the Empire's ultimate weapon.

The film follows the character Jyn Erso (played by Felicity Jones), a young woman who is recruited by the Rebel Alliance because of her connection to her father, Galen Erso (played by Mads Mikkelsen), who is a scientist working for the Empire. Galen is forced to work on the construction of the Death Star, but secretly embeds a design flaw in the weapon's system that could be exploited to destroy it. Jyn joins the Rebel Captain Cassian Andor (played by Diego Luna) and a group of resistance fighters to locate her father and retrieve the Death Star Plans.

Besides Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor, the team also includes K-2SO (voiced by Alan Tudyk), a reprogrammed Imperial droid; Chirrut Îmwe (played by Donnie Yen), a blind warrior with a strong connection to The Force; Baze Malbus (played by Jiang Wen), a deadly mercenary and Chirrut's companion; and Bodhi Rook (played by Riz Ahmed), a defected Imperial pilot. The film's primary antagonist is Director Orson Krennic (played by Ben Mendelsohn), who is in charge of the Death Star project.

The team discovers that the Death Star Plans are located on the Imperial data storage facility on the planet Scarif. They form a plan to infiltrate the facility by posing as Imperial personnel and transmitting the Death Star Plans to the Rebel fleet. While the team is on Scarif, a major battle breaks out between the Rebel fleet and the Imperial forces, resulting in a race against time to locate and transmit the plans.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story received generally positive reviews from critics and fans alike. The film was praised for its gritty, war-like tone, which provided a different perspective on the Star Wars galaxy compared to the main series. Standout elements such as the cinematography, character development, and unique storytelling approach were also commended by audiences. The film was a commercial success, grossing over $1 billion at the box-office worldwide.

Rogue One successfully expanded the Star Wars universe and demonstrated that stand-alone stories set within the larger context of the saga could be well-executed and well-received. The film set the stage for other Star Wars Anthology projects such as "Solo: A Star Wars Story" and various television series on the Disney++ streaming platform. It also introduced a new group of characters and storylines that have continued to be explored in novels, comic books, and other media.
