Episode 10: (27 BBY) Age of Republic Obi-Wan and Count Dooku

Make more laser swords. I mean you know even though that wasn't that's probably

what's happening is that there's Yoda probably has an NDA that just you

could not apply your knowledge in this field. Obi-Wan tracks down a lost

holocron that will change the fate of the entire galaxy or not. Meanwhile Count

Dooku kills a magic cat. Today we battle Age of Republic Comics mission and the

cost on this edition of the 11 Parsecs podcast.

Hello and welcome to podcast number 10 of the 11 Parsecs podcast. We've reached

double digits. I'm excited. Here's my good buddy John. Hello my name is Eric and

today we are reviewing two comic books from the Age of Republic series. Kind of

excited about this. John it's been a little while since we last had our

podcast about Queen's Shadow. Let's let's pop some tops real quick shall we? What

do you? Oh yes please. Thank you. Let me get a beer. The sinuses have been a

little bit crazy I think for both of us over the past two weeks so the beer will

do us good. It does? Yeah well nobody told me that. Uncle Pappy's cough syrup. I mean I don't know.

It's yeah it'll be it'll be good. Okay John are you ready to pop? Let's see here.

I'm ready. I'm so ready. Yeah this is a good one. I'm excited about this beer. I'm

excited to talk about this beer. We're gonna pop in three two one. That was harder than I thought.

Okay. That's pretty good. All right John what are you drinking? I am drinking Creature

Comforts. Okay. Lupulus. I like it. Yes Lupulus. I had to look that up because I

didn't know what that name would possibly mean and would you like to know

what it means? I would. Okay go look it up yourself because I forgot. Okay that's

fine. We'll leave that as a quiz to the podcast. It is a hazy double IPA and you

know that is right in my uh. Is this your wheelhouse? You know do you like the term wheelhouse? I don't like the term

wheelhouse. I feel like like for some reason. It's overplayed. It is like for some

reason like three or four years ago I really started hearing the word

wheelhouse. Yes. And I don't I don't yeah I'm not a fan. I think I'm gonna start saying it's right in your

millhouse. As a reference to the Simpsons comic. Yes I heard that one too. Oh you have? I have heard that. Yes I have. I was just gonna say right in your millhouse and just see if people catch me. Like if I'm saying yeah that

sounds like it's right in your millhouse. I swear I've heard that. Somebody you know

doing a spoonerism or something. Just I've heard that. But it is fascinating to

me how you can see you can track. I'm sure there are people who dedicate their

careers to this. How a word will become very much in vogue. Oh yeah. And you see

it sweep through and then suddenly it's gone. It fades. It totally fades. No no I get that.

So whatever I was saying in your millhouse I just want to make sure we

specify that I was referring to the Simpsons comic character. Yes. Okay I well

there is there are millhouses. What? Like there are actual millhouses where they had a

mill wheel and they like made. Oh no no no no no. I have heard it and I knew the

person was referring to the comic. Alright because you know like everything's coming

up millhouse like you know one of the best. That's not a comic. That's a cartoon.

Yeah sorry a cartoon. Yeah you're correct. Technically yeah it was still a cartoon

when it was on the Tracy Ullman show. So so for the for the for the kids of the

audience. The Simpsons which has been long-running for like how many years has

that show been on? Like 25? I think it went off the air in like 99. The

Simpsons? Yeah. No no no no no no no. Real shame they haven't made anything since then.

Oh John it took me a second to get your joke but geez that was hard. That was

like that was taking a dagger. Man that was rough. That was a rough joke. I know if

you're a true Simpsons aficionado then you know exactly the episode where the

series ended. Oh wait wait so there's a jump the shark episode for the Simpsons. There is a

jump the shark and yes shoot it with a machine gun episode. Please enlighten me.

Of course I'm gonna draw a blank on the name of the episode. No no no. It's the one.

It's the one where Principal Skinner it turns out he's a fraud. He's an

imposter. Okay I can see how that. You don't know that? No I don't. If that doesn't ring a bell then you

don't know it. I don't I don't know it. Yeah. It's preposterous. I never knew you

held such hard opinions about the Simpsons. That was like a that was a very

like just like like a knife to the gut joke. That was good. I like it. We've

covered this before. I have hard and fast and unwavering opinions about meaningless

things. Agreed. And then no opinions about deeply critical issues. Agreed

agreed. Okay fair enough. So with that being said let's get well actually no I

gotta talk about my beer. I'm excited about this beer. So my wife my wife was at the

liquor store and she was I was like just pick up the coolest looking can that you

can because that's just that's just what I you know this because basically Westside

Westside is our John and I's local beverage center.

They have a very good selection, but Jon and I have been very thorough in going through that entire selection pretty much.

So I'm like if you see something that you think, because my wife definitely remembers cans versus actual names of beers and stuff like that.

I was like, you know, find something that's got really cool art and pick it up for me.

Yeah, good marking. And she got me Fire, Skulls, and Money India Pale Ale.

It's literally, it's the coolest can, it really is. It's by

Toppling Goliath Brewing, which is out of Iowa.

Not local!

But it's literally just a pile of money with a skull on top with flames in the background, which is pretty metal and pretty awesome in my opinion.

Like I'm digging it.

Like my beer, there must be a story behind that.

Oh, I'm sure that there is. And maybe at some point I'll try to do some research. I didn't do any research on this.

You know, I just kind of like saw the can when she brought it home was like, all right, that's badass. I dig it.

Is it a good beer? Is it a tasty beer?

It is. And I have to admit too that it came in a four pack and I drank the other three and I saved it specifically for the podcast.

Oh, same here. Yeah, same here.

So let's talk about that. We've been away for a little bit. We've been away, I think it's been two and a half weeks since we last recorded the Queen's Shadow podcast.

Both of us, our kids had fall break. So we went and visited different places of the US in a quarantine-ish fashion.

I was on the east coast of Florida, you were on the gulf coast of Florida.

And had a good time. Where were you at in Florida exactly?

We went to a very small Community called Grayton Beach.

Okay. And this is in the, like what part of the gulf?

It's in the panhandle of Florida, near Destin. I don't know how to get more specific than that, but it's a beautiful little town, village, whatever you want to call it. It's tiny.

You sent me a really cool picture of what looked like sand dunes, like right on the ocean.

Yes. That's where they are. That's where they keep them down there. Right there on the ocean.

Right there next to the ocean. They don't let them out that much. They have to stay here.

No.

So did you guys, were you allowed to go through the sand dunes? Or is it like a park-ish type thing where they try not to keep people on them?

Well, there are a couple of parks and there was actually a sand Dune trail right out front of our rental house, but it was closed.

Oh.

I think they're doing a lot of work, a lot of restoration down there.

Oh, they've had two hurricanes I think go through in the last two or three years.

Yeah. Yeah. So they've had stuff. But it's an amazing area. I would love to spend more time down there.

Unfortunately, because it is so small and so awesome, it gets a little pricey.

Yeah. Yeah, the whole Panhandle area gets up there.

It is. The whole Panhandle has gotten just insane.

Yeah. For those that don't know, that may be listening to the podcast for the first time, John and I are both in Atlanta.

And most people around here, when you want to get away for like a week or less than that, you head down to Florida and go to some coast on Florida.

So I was actually on the East Coast at Space Coast, which is just south of Cape Canaveral.

And again, missed a rocket launch by a couple of days.

I didn't see one.

Yeah. Second time we've been down there that I was really, really waiting on a rocket launch.

And this was supposed to be a Delta Heavy, which we saw last time we were down there.

Oh, they're nice.

Yeah, which is a big one. Those are the ones that actually you feel the rumble up and down the beach.

And yeah, I had to postpone it. It is what it is. It's weather.

I mean, Elon's setting those things up like every like week at this point.

So at some point we'll definitely be able to get down there for another one.

But it is what it is. But had a great time. Great, great vacation.

Came back to Atlanta. Had a normal week last week.

And we were able to get over our little sinus conditions.

And I think that we are good to record about.

Yes.

The Age of Republic.

You had me reminiscing about that week on the beach, which was much, much needed.

And so I kind of got lost there. But I'm back now. And so, yeah, let's go forward.

And pretend you're on a dreamy... I forget the name of the planet.

I was going to name the planet that was in the Obi-Wan comic that they go to with all the purple trees.

But I can't think of it now.

It starts with a D.

Obi-Wan does all the research to figure out about the planet.

Dago, Dago, Dagobah.

No, it wasn't Dagobah. It wasn't Dagobah.

All right, so let's talk about the Obi-Wan.

So tonight we're going to be talking about the Obi-Wan comic Age of Republic.

It's a one-off that was in the Age of Republic series.

Came out in January of 2019.

And then we're also going to talk about the Doku issue of the Age of Republic series that came out in February of 2019.

Both really strong single episode comics, I think.

Let's talk about the Obi-Wan first.

Yeah, so let's talk about... So if we're doing this in order, as we say we are.

Right now we are at 28 BBY. We just got done with the Queen's Shadow.

We're still in 28 BBY for the Obi-Wan comic.

Anakin is growing older as a Padawan.

He is starting to kind of understand that he was a little bit different than the other Padawans.

And I think that this issue, the mission, I think is what it's called.

So let me talk a little bit about the comic.

The comic is a one-off that came out in the Age of Republic series,

January 2nd, 2019. It's called The Mission.

Jodie Houser wrote it, which Jodie's wrote other comics that we've reviewed already.

And Corey Smith and Wynton Santos did the art for it.

It's a... I like the Age of Republic series because I feel like that they

contain a good story within that one comic that they get.

If you remember the Darth Maul where he lops the guy's head off at the middle of dinner.

If you remember the Qui-Gon Jinn where Qui-Gon sees all the weird tree people while he's meditating.

It's a really good way to show a lot about a character because it's solely focused on that character.

There's not much character development in them.

Maybe this one stuck out a little bit more to me for character development,

but it wasn't just character development.

Let me say this. This was the first comic that we read in the Age of Republic series

that I felt like it was character development for two people,

not just the person that the comic is named after, the Obi-Wan Kenobi, but also with Anakin.

I felt like their partnership kind of grew a little bit.

What was your thoughts on the comic itself?

I got more about Obi-Wan than Anakin.

And the one thing I would say about that is, as far as highlighting or illustrating more about the character,

I find it really fascinating.

This is the second story we've seen where what Obi-Wan said in Return of the Jedi, right?

When he told Luke that he thought he could train Vader as well as Yoda and he was wrong?

Yeah.

We don't see any of that here.

All we see is Obi-Wan full of doubt. Nothing but doubt.

Well, he redeems himself a little toward the end there.

There's a little bit of an Epiphany where he's like,

Yes, there is, but I'm talking about what he told Luke later about,

I thought I could do it just as good as Yoda.

What? No, you didn't.

Yeah.

You really didn't. Maybe that comes later.

Well, yeah, this is the second time.

He still hasn't seen the Vader arc at that point.

So he still thinks he's a total, total failure.

I kind of get that.

So I don't want to do the whole summary type thing again,

but basically Obi-Wan is charged with heading over to find a Jedi holocron

and that some research team has found on some planet.

Do you know why?

Why?

I'm sorry. Do you know why you don't really want to give a summary of the plot?

Why?

Of the MacGuffin that is the holocron? Because it doesn't matter.

Wait, wait, wait.

When I first read the comic, I was so frustrated because they finally get the holocron.

I'm like, good, show us what's on the holocron.

And you don't get to see what's on the holocron.

Do you know why? Because that's not the point of this journey.

I agree.

The point of this journey is the character development between he and Anakin.

Okay, so first off, let's talk about Obi-Wan not wanting to take Anakin.

He thinks that Anakin is not ready.

He's trying to keep, yeah, he's trying to, no.

Well, he's not ready or he's just trying to keep him protected.

He has the master-apprentice type situation where he's like, you're not ready yet.

But then Anakin's kind of like, he doesn't, to be fair, he's not throwing a fit or anything,

but he's just kind of like, yeah, now I get to go hang out with all the other young Padawans

that like, because he's way older, he's more advanced than them at this point.

I mean, you can pretty much already tell that from just the first couple pages of the comic.

But he also knows, he's like, I don't want to go hang out with those kids.

I mean, they're younger than me.

They kind of suck when they compare to me.

You know, it's a legitimate complaint, I think, from Anakin.

And Obi-Wan brushes it off.

He's like, no, I'm not taking you at all.

And then I think the interesting part is that Yoda's like, Yoda, the guy who was just like,

I don't think we should train this boy, is like, no, dude.

You need to start taking him places.

You need to start, like, getting him going here.

You know what I mean?

Like, you need to put him on the path.

Right, because if Yoda can see anything, he can see that Anakin is going to build resentment.

No, Yoda can't see anything at this point.

He's still so foggy-headed.

When 900 years old, you look.

I know, I know.

I'm just, yeah, the more and more I get into the everything up until episode four,

Yoda just, he's missing everything.

He's missing everything.

Like, he's not seeing anything.

Like, Yoda is not wise.

Okay, but he saw this.

You have to give him a little bit of credit for this because he's right.

You've got to get this kid out.

He knows he's more advanced than his peers.

And it's just going to make him resent everybody, especially you, Obi-Wan,

if you don't get him out and get him some experience.

Yeah, and Yoda has a very good line where he's talking about that it's very dangerous to have a poorly trained Jedi

versus, you know, one that isn't trained at all.

And that's a good quote where he's just kind of saying, like, look, we've decided this.

So you've taken him on as a charge.

You've got to continue your job, and you've got to do it.

Jump in feet first and get this done.

Yeah, so there is a little bit of Yoda wisdom there.

I will agree with that.

He's not wrong.

He's not wrong in this case.

He still can't tell that everything that's going on in the same city that he's in.

But, agreed, he is a bit wise when it comes to this training.

Did that seem to upset you when I said that the holocron is a MacGuffin and it just doesn't even matter?

So, yeah.

Did I miss something?

No, you did not miss anything.

John, you did not miss anything, so I'm not going to say anything else further.

Oh, God.

No, it's not fair.

So, originally, I was thinking that this was a Sith holocron and there are some Sith holocrons that come up fairly soon.

Right.

That stuff happens with, but it's not.

It's a Jedi holocron, so it's different.

And I'm not aware as of right now of anything that is in this holocron that we discover later.

So, okay.

There are some Sith holocrons that come up a lot sooner that are very, very interesting.

But, yeah.

But, no, as of right now, I am unaware of anything.

Again, this early in the whole Clone Wars and all that stuff, maybe it does pop up in the next couple of weeks or something of what we review.

But I just don't know what it is.

So, all right.

Here's something that both these comics, and I'm going to touch on.

The variants of species in this comics are all animalistic.

Did you catch on?

Do you agree with that?

Do I agree with that?

Sure.

But is that, oh, I guess that does kind of, it's a weird thing.

When you say animalistic, what do you mean by animalistic?

You mean more Earth anthropomorphized creatures?

Anthropomorphic, anthropro, hold on a second.

Anthropomorphic.

Just call them anthros for short.

Okay.

Let's just call them anthros.

More anthro type animals that you would see on Earth have become species in these two comic books versus actual other alien species.

All right.

So, what I mean from that, I don't think I remember seeing Master Tosan.

She comes in to give Obi-Wan the mission that he doesn't originally take Anakin on.

And she looks very cat-like.

Do you not get that vibe?

I don't get cat.

I get mouse maybe.

Oh, you get mouse from the ears?

Yeah.

Okay.

Sure.

Okay.

Mouse-like.

But cat-like.

It feels like an Earth animal converted to a species.

Okay.

Well, when you're looking at the bird people.

Yeah, the bird people, that's my next example.

They're clearly birds.

That's my next example, yeah.

So, they go land on this planet that is actually bird people.

And yeah, legit bird people.

But now, are you thinking possibly about from the next comic we're going to cover, the Tiger guy?

Yes.

No.

Exactly.

Exactly.

This is exactly what I was about to talk about.

But see, you don't get to do that here.

You're really basing this off of bird people.

That's what you're saying.

Okay.

So, we've got two species that I've never seen before in the Star Wars universe.

One of them is, my opinion, cat-like, your opinion, mouse-like.

And the second type is a bird people that is distinctly bird-like.

Bird.

So, what species is the archaeologist?

Because I know, even though I've never watched Clone Wars, I know what her face is.

Ahsoka.

Yeah, she's that species, right?

Yeah, it's not Twi'lek.

We really got to do our homework on this.

You recognize.

Yeah, we really need to do our homework on the exact species here.

Flash cards.

We've talked about this.

Star Wars is never about that.

Yeah, but.

Star Wars is about the species or window dressing in the cantina.

That was really the intent.

Yeah, agreed.

But we need to learn our race.

We need to learn our species.

We need to.

We need to.

We're going to come up with some Flash cards and we're going to get through them.

As our kids study math or as our kids study Spanish, we're going to get through and figure out the Star Wars species.

But, again, they're both very distinct.

I liked them.

I thought they were both great.

You know, and I shouldn't focus too much on Master T'Osan.

She's just in the, literally, like, three panels.

But it just struck me right when I saw her.

I was like, I've heard of Master T'Osan, but I didn't know what she looked like.

And then you see this and you're just like, okay, I thought cat, you thought mouse.

I get it.

Either or.

And then you got the distinct bird people down in Dalinor that I'm just like, those are literally like, do you remember the, was it the fillies?

What was the fillies mascot?

What was the chicken mascot in Major League Baseball?

Oh, God.

Do you know what I'm talking about?

Was that San Diego?

Was it San Diego?

I think it was.

I think it was San Diego.

Like in the late 70s.

Wow, what a flashback to childhood.

Yeah, late 70s, early 80s.

San Diego Padres had a mascot that was like this chicken looking thing.

That is the exact thing I thought of.

I can totally picture that.

I mean, just that came out of nowhere and I can picture that.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying.

Like, we'll post something into the Discord showing a picture of this bird-like mascot.

But literally, that was the first thing I thought of when I saw those frames in the comic.

I was just like, that's exactly what that, I feel like that's based on.

I don't know, but I'm just feeling like that's what it's based on.

No, they look pretty badass.

I'll give you that.

Yeah, they look like awesome versions of that.

I totally agree with that.

But anyways, Anakin's asked to stay, you know, sit in behind.

The Holocron gets passed to Obi-Wan.

And then these bird-like things are like, no, we want the Holocron.

You wouldn't have come visit if there wasn't something valuable.

And the big fight ensues.

I won't give the end of it away because I'm not sure.

It's a pretty decent little ending.

I thought it was pretty well done.

But you didn't know that Anakin lives.

Obi-Wan lives also.

But, you know, it was it was a decent one off.

I mean, what do you think?

I mean, compared to the other one offs that we've read, I don't think it was as good as the Qui-Gon Jinn and the Darth Maul.

No, no, no. Of all of the ones we've read so far, the Qui-Gon Jinn one was definitely the best.

Agreed.

I got the most out of that one.

But again, that's because I know kind of the least about Qui-Gon Jinn.

So I've seen the dynamic with Obi-Wan and Anakin several times now.

Right. We read the whole Anakin and Obi-Wan series.

It's yeah, it's reinforcing at this point.

Not not illustrative.

Yeah, I would say definitely that this comic was probably geared with people that had not read the Obi-Wan and Anakin comic series.

Like, it's almost like it's almost like a summary of their relationship in those five comics that we read.

You know what I mean?

I'm chewing on that one.

Uh, sure. Yeah, there was more to it in the other one, though.

But but but he's older and he's decided.

Well, see, that's the thing that that's this is all right.

Let's let's go back a little bit to that.

The Obi-Wan and Anakin series was great.

I thought it was really good.

I think the over the five comics you see a really decent arc.

Anakin felt a lot older in that series than he does in this series.

To me. Do you agree with that?

Is he not a lot older?

Oh, wait, we're going chronological.

He's older here.

Yeah, that never even occurred to me.

I'm so sorry that I feel like an idiot, but well, no, it seems like a little boy.

OK, so here's my thing.

The Obi-Wan and Anakin comic series that we read, that five issue arc was twenty nine BBY.

This is twenty eight BBY.

So he is a year older, but he seems way younger in this comic.

Way younger. Like I if I had thought that through, that would have been my leading criticism.

I now do not like this comic at all because it now makes no sense.

He's already they've been on that grand adventure on the planet.

A grand of it, like a very grand grand event.

That was grand. Yes.

And he seemed like an older, a young adult, you know, but much older than he is here.

I really thought I lost myself.

I really thought he was a younger child here.

Yeah. If I were to if I were to take both of those two comics, I would pinpoint his age at about 13 to 14 in the Obi-Wan

Anakin comic series, and I would put his age at about 11 to 12 here.

Like just just by not by not necessarily just by the art, but just by the way he carries himself, confidence, Obi-Wan's confidence.

I mean, look at Obi-Wan in that that five arc comic series.

He's like got beard down to here.

He looks like this. Like, I mean, I always told you that I love that series because it reminds me of like the 90s X-Men.

Like it is like a really well drawn, like Obi-Wan looks older and then you get to here and there's panels in this comic.

Now, this is if you if you reverse the chronology where this one's first and then that one is after, it makes total sense.

Agreed. In almost every way.

The way with this coming after that big adventure on that planet, it makes no sense at all.

So that being said, we are going by one group of people's interpretation of when this stuff happened.

And maybe that interpretation is wrong and maybe this comic from the Star Wars film group would say that, no, this actually happened before.

But we're going by what we have.

So well, well, well, well, OK, so that raises the question, how would you take this comic and place it into a chronology?

Yeah, I would have to literally sit down with this one and the Obi-Wan series and say that this has to happen before this.

I don't know when the Obi-Wan Anakin happens.

Has to, has to, has to.

But this one happens before. Yeah.

Agreed. It is it is it is decided.

It is decided. We think this is the first official disagreement with Philly U-19's awesome, awesome list in chronological order that I think we've come across to where we think that this comic may have happened 30 BBY or a little bit, maybe even 30.

Well, you can't get any younger than that because of the movie, first movie and everything.

But we have a feeling that this may be a misplacement.

Are we in agreement?

Yeah, very much so.

It makes no sense otherwise.

OK, well, that's good.

That's good. We've come to our first in baseball cards.

You have air cards. This may be a little bit of an error, but we'll figure that out to our glorious listeners.

We would say that if we were to reread this and do this in chronological order, we would probably put this in front of the Obi-Wan Anakin series.

I would have a question. Yeah, I mean, I did mentally without even thinking about it, without even realizing I was doing that.

All right. Well, let's move.

That's a great segue into the second comic, which is the Age of Republic Count Dooku one off.

The Count Dooku one off came out in February 13th to 2019.

It's called The Cost, again, written by Jodie Houser, art by Luke Ross.

This one was an interesting.

So so we have not.

OK, well, let me say this.

Our next podcast, we're going over Dooku Jedi Lost, which is a audio drama, which will be very, very interesting.

I think I don't know.

I'm not gonna speak for you, but I've already started listening to part of it.

And I probably maybe.

It's about a six hour pod, six hour audio drama. I think about an hour, maybe an hour and 15 minutes

into it. I was interested to see where this Count Dooku storyline fit in because the only thing

that we've really ever talked about with Count Dooku on the podcast up until now in 27 BBY

is Dooku's Padawans in Master and Apprentice. You know, of course, we got the end of Master

Apprentice, the book, but you know, Dooku's mentioned a bunch in that book, but we don't

really hear anything about what he's doing, what he's what he's what he's after he's left the Jedi

Council, what he or after he's left the Jedi Order, what he's actually doing. And this comic

was actually pretty good, in my opinion. Like, I felt like it was a good

backdrop into all the kind of seedy things that he's doing behind the scenes

now that Maul's been killed and he is the apprentice.

Okay, sure. Yeah, it's a little slice. It's a tiny slice.

It's a tiny slice. A tiny slice. Coloring and coloring in the characters a little bit.

It was fun. It was, you know, good read. Okay, wait, wait, let's compare this to the

Darth Maul. I don't think it's epic or anything. Well, no, I'm guessing it's epic, but it's just

a good viewpoint into his what he's doing as of right now before we hit Attack of the Clones.

I think that this comic is directly comparable to the Darth Maul comic because both of them,

at the time that that comic or that story is being told to us, are Sith Apprentices, right?

Right. So what do you think? We talked about this a bunch, I think it was podcast four,

where we talked about the Age of Republic, Darth Maul, one-off. Darth Maul's going crazy. I mean,

he's just like such pen of hate. He's such pen of anger. Doku is like the exact opposite. Like,

he's this calculated political mastermind that's, you know, of course he encounters a Jedi on this

trip. Okay, so to set up this comic, basically, Doku, this comic starts off with Doku going to

Sibelius, I think was the name of the world. Basically, he's going to make friends with this

rebel weapons dealing gang that Palpatine has sent him to talk to, but he also needs to have

a cover on the same planet. So he's talking to the Trade Federation and these other people inside the

planet about coming up with deals that maybe his family, because you got to remember, Doku's left

the Jedi Order at this point. He's acting on behalf of his family, no longer Jedi Master Doku,

he is Count Doku, and he is acting on behalf of his family to make trades. So he's kind of got

two layers to this trip. The first layer being on the top is that he is meeting with, you know,

the Trade Federation on this planet and making brokering deals so that his family fortune can

continue. But then underneath that, he's supposed to be meeting with this rebel, or I shouldn't

call it rebel, that's the wrong word to say, this arms dealing group to kind of sow disruption on

this planet and other planets so that when Palpatine does come to power, he comes to power a

lot easier. I thought it was good. I thought it was a good story. I don't know necessarily that

it, how do I say this? When I compare it to Maul, and Maul's one of them, Maul's just this like

bloodthirsty, like killer, like he's just like, like ready to go. And then you get to Doku,

and it's just like, yeah, I'll deal with, you know, the people whenever I have to the Jedi.

Basically, when Maul's, I mean, when Doku's on this planet, he encounters a Jedi that he did

not expect to encounter, and ends up helping the Jedi to a point, I won't give away the whole story,

because it's a pretty good comic to read. But um, I don't know, it was it was it was good. I,

I like the Maul one better just because the the violence. I mean, is that is that better?

Uh, sure. I can tell you that. Yeah, you're contrasting Maul being the the bull, the raging

bull, just just caged up bull. And the sort of clinical approach that we get here with Doku.

Very, very clean. It there was, there was really no challenge to it, right? Which was what Darth

Maul was all about is I want to challenge, challenge me. And Doku's just like, yeah,

you got to die. You're dead. Yeah. He's very, it was it was it was anticlimactic. Really,

I thought there'd be a little more to it. So we but I can tell you and this is I'm trying to figure

out why. When the the portal kitty cat shows up in the first panels that he shows up, I knew he was

going to die. And I don't know why, but I just knew that. Well, so number one, it's a new species

of Jedi that you've never seen before. He immediately shows up, he immediately shows up in

the Jedi robes. And you can definitely tell that Doku is surprised that there is a Jedi here.

Well, yeah, very much. So in this, this confused me a little bit too, because

you're assuming and I don't know for sure. You're assuming that Palpatine didn't know he was going

to be there either. So Palpatine is has understood that there's a gap in his knowledge of the Jedi

at this point, right? I did not think about that. But yeah, sure. Yeah. So you can't know everything.

Yeah, so well, I know. I don't well, I don't know. Yeah, I mean, Jedi, I mean, he's

I mean, that makes it really boring if he of course he knows everything.

No, that's not boring.

He's not a mission. I get that part.

But I'm just saying, like, he's supposed to be able to feel out and keep this mask up,

you know, as as the chancellor, you know, keep this mask up and still have feelers out,

you know, all over. I compare him to like the spider from Game of Thrones.

Like, I feel like he's got like tentacles and everything and kind of just knows everything.

You know what I mean? Sure.

At this point, that is. Yes, of course.

So so I don't know. I felt like this was a legitimate surprise.

Jedi on some some I don't know.

I was the Jedi.

The Jedi is there to investigate the exact group that he sent Doku to go make friends with.

That's true. That's that's a very good point.

Yes. So it's kind of like a it's kind of like, oh, you missed that one or did he?

Or maybe I'm wrong. I mean, maybe maybe Palpatine is this is a test for Doku.

You know what I mean? Like you talk about at the end of the mall one off where mall, you know,

went and killed those people and killed the Han Solo lookalike and all this stuff.

And he gets back and he's and of course, you know, Sidious is like, yeah, you know,

I knew you were going down there and he's like, what bastard?

You know, because he remembered Maul thought that he had gotten away with this big kind of

hunting expedition that that didn't need to happen.

And then, well, good.

If this if this was a test for Doku, it wasn't much of a test.

Yeah. He didn't flinch.

He just took care of business and he was done.

All right. I got a hypothetical for you.

Maul and Doku fighting who would win?

Maul and Doku.

Huh. I want to say Doku, and I don't have enough knowledge at this point to back that up.

OK, this is a question that will.

So we've got two, three, three more podcasts until Episode two.

So yeah. So so after that, I'm going to ask you the question again.

I am really excited about the Doku I lost just because I like Doku's character a lot.

And I think I mentioned this on the Master and Apprentice episode, Episode two.

I like his character a lot because he's very mysterious.

He's wizard like. And I think that's also, you know, the actor that plays all that kind of stuff.

You know, coming from Lord of the Rings.

But right. But I feel like he's like this kind of mystical guy that if you go back and ask kids

that saw the prequel or they grew up with the prequel, everybody called Darth Maul.

Darth Maul is the best. You know, why?

So mean.

He's crazy, you know, evil. But I think Doku would slide under the radar there and just kind of be like.

Very powerful.

OK, so one thing in this comic that I really found interesting was that the Jedi that recognizes Doku on the planet says that he barely met Doku at one point because Doku and Yoda used to have lightsaber battles to show the underlings or the younger Jedi.

You know how to how to lightsaber fight in that type of situation.

They used to battle all the time.

And of course, you know that, you know, Doku was trained by Yoda and that was his battle one.

But I just thought that was interesting and kind of like a nice nod episode to even though we haven't watched Episode two yet.

I still want to understand why I had the premonition that the kitty cat was going to die.

I just can't figure out why I got that sense.

You know, I don't know.

I, I felt the exact same thing, but I felt it because I don't know this Jedi.

He happens to be on this.

He happens to know any of them.

Well, I'm just saying he happens to be on this planet.

Well, you know, a bunch of them from the from the throne room in the I mean, not for the throne room, but I didn't know Mrs.

Mouse from the last comic.

So basically the Tiger guy thinks the Doku is on the side.

He understands the Doki was a former Jedi.

They could help him uncover this band of, of mercenaries and weapon.

Gun runners, gun, the gun runners, I guess they're gun runners anyways.

The, he's supposed to make contact with.

So they both go and infiltrate this base.

They get into the base and the gun runners turn on, uh, what they perceive

as two Jedi, uh, when of course Doku is like, I'm not really Jedi.

He pulls out this red lightsaber.

You can tell tiger guys like, Holy shit, Tony, the tiger's like, I don't, I

didn't know that I was getting in bed with a red lightsaber, what's going on.

And basically they fight off, uh, you know, they fight, they fight off the

mercenaries and then Tiger guy dies from gunshot.

The argument right now is between me and John is that I thought that he died from

one of the gun runners actually shooting him and Doku not blocking him.

All right, hold on.

Let's see.

I'll let's, let's look at this panel.

All right.

So, uh, of course Doku raises up and tiger guys like, Holy crap, what's going on?

They start bouncing lasers off and hitting everything.

Okay.

Okay.

Okay.

I'm looking, I'm looking at the page where pew or tiger, tiger Jedi guy dies.

See, at first I thought, okay, he stabbed into the back with his lightsaber.

But it says the word pew.

So that's definitely a blaster.

I, and then there's a picture of the blaster in midair.

I missed that.

But now I got to correct something.

I read the sequence there as, uh, they get ambushed.

And so Doku whips out his lightsaber and, and, and the Tiger guy doesn't really

notice until they're done slaughtering these people.

He says, Oh no, no, no lightsaber.

No, back up to back up to a pages back and you hear the bloom and he turns, the

Tiger guy turned around and says, what?

Tony, the tiger scarf of blazing in the Wind feels the red lightsaber behind him.

He, he says he feels the, I saw that as what reacting to the, to the guys.

No, no, he, he knew.

No, you're actually, I know that you're right.

You're right.

You're right.

But he, but he didn't have time to think about it until the battle.

It's the same thing as the, the mall comic that we went through where, you know, mall

and the capture Jedi both fight with each other up until they have to fight each

other, you know what I mean?

I do have to point out that this is another example of apparently the color of the

lightsaber really means something.

And I don't know what, so, so, okay, here's the question.

Uh, the red lightsaber part of it, like I think is not as big of a deal as the tiger.

Tony, the tiger Jedi did not think that he was going to hear another lightsaber come

up because he knows that count Doku is now count Doku.

Okay.

So, so, so I don't, I don't wait from the Jedi Order.

You surrender your weapon.

Is that, I think you surrender your lightsaber or you're supposed to, unless

you're what remind me, I'm trying to remember what was one of the last trials

or last skills that you have to complete?

You build your comic Jedi.

You have, you can go to home Depot and get the parts and make, have the ability

The question becomes, do you feel the need to continue using the lightsaber

I, I, I'm not going to pretend to, I feel like Tony, the tiger didn't totally the

tiger Jedi did not expect to hear the of a lightsaber at that point.

And that's where you get the panel where he's turning his head.

Feeling like, I think I'm really torn on that one because that, that's

either extremely naive or, or, or valid, but it raises the question of, okay, so

how many, we've seen a couple of comics now with, with Jedi's just walking away.

So, uh, how, how, how many Jedi, you know, leave?

It's not that they don't finish training.

They finish training, they're Jedi and they leave.

That is a great question.

I don't know.

And are they supposed to surrender their laser swords?

And are they like, they have to like sign an affidavit saying I

won't make any more laser swords.

I mean, you know.

Even though that's probably what's happening is that there's, Yoda

probably has an NDA that just says you cannot apply your knowledge

in this field to another field.

Like you may know how to make this, but you can't, we're not allowing you to.

And that's where the Sith are really the Rebels because they're like, you know,

this is California.

Screw your NDA.

There's a, there's like a term paper or dissertation in there somewhere.

The Sith are the real Rebels, man.

They are the original union for non-Jedi.

Like they are fighting for the regular guy's rights to use The Force

It was very much like a, like a, like a, I'm going to enforce this rule no matter

what, which I still don't get that rule.

I think that, that may be as of right now, that may be one of the most.

Interesting rules to me in this whole entire universe.

Like why, why, why not make a whole order?

And even the Tiger, even Tony the Tiger Jedi says, um, we all thought as Jedi

that you left the order to go create a new force sensitive order, not necessarily,

you know, a Jedi or Sith or anything.

We thought you had left to go make a new force sensitive order somewhere else.

And he's like, no, no, it's much more boring.

I'm spending my family's fortune or trying to continue to create

money with my family's fortune.

You know what?

I got to go back to that because, uh, I glossed over that part.

Um, it's, it's, it's what I got the dinner table.

So you can do that.

fight, you know, I'm going to kill you, but I still respect you.

Doku doesn't have that.

He's cold blooded.

He's just like, yeah, he's not trying to beat this guy.

He's there's no respect here.

He's just like, I'm using you, you know, simply to get this guy, which I'm

about to con into making sure that he serves us versus whoever he's serving now.

So I have to admit that the Age of Republic series thus far, I've

never seen a series that's this far.

And we're almost done with them.

So, uh, after the Doku Jedi last, we've got two more Age of Republics and

then we get into Age of Resistance and, you know, some other stuff, but the

Age of Republic Comics, the one-offs.

I feel like there's these introductory stories to invite you to the other comics.

Um, so the Darth Maul one-off was, was very much like, Hey, if you like this,

you'll probably like the actual five issue Darth Maul series that we read.

Um, if you like this, you know, there's not a Doku one.

Now that I think about it, there's not a Doku.

Um, if you like the Obi-Wan one, and maybe you like the Obi-Wan

and Anakin series that we read.

Um, yeah, I don't know.

I, they're like a shallower version, I think, than the whole comic series

that they came out with for these guys.

Um, but they're not bad.

Podcast 11 is going to be Doku Jedi Lost.

After that, we're pulling a little bit of an Audible.

So basically, after that, you've got a Jango Fett Age of Republic comic.

These are the comics that we've been reading, which are one-offs.

We've got the Jango Fett Age of Republic one-off.

And then you have Attack of the Clones.

And then after that, you have Jedi of the Republic Mace Windu, which is a series of comic books, which is five comic books.

And then you have the Age of Republic Anakin Skywalker.

It'd be really weird after the Jedi Doku Lost for us to only do a podcast about one comic book.

I say that in knowing that this is almost an hour that we're at right now.

We've only discussed two comic books.

But I think what we're going to do is pull a little bit of an Audible,

and we're going to grab the Mace Windu Jedi of the Republic,

the first two comics from that series, and add that to the Jango Fett comic book

so that we have three comics to kind of talk about before we watch Attack of the Clones.

I think I've mapped them out pretty well.

Next podcast, we're going to be reviewing the audio drama Doku Jedi Lost.

And then after that, we're going to jump into some comic books.

And then we're going to be doing another movie.
