The Taung is an ancient and legendary species in the Star Wars universe, with a history dating back to the very beginnings of the Republic. Hailing from the planet Coruscant, the Taung were humanoid with greyish skin, hollowed eye sockets, and prominent cheekbones. They were known for their relative isolation and valorous combat prowess, qualities that would later come to define The Mandalorian culture. The Taung were forced to abandon their homeworld following a series of brutal conflicts with the human Zhell, later relocating to the planet Mandalore which they conquered and named after their leader, Mandalore the First.
Despite their martial and often aggressive conduct, the Taung culture placed a high value on honor, loyalty, and courage. Their society was organized into clans with each member proudly bearing the emblem of the totem beast of their specific clan. Leadership of a clan typically passed down to the bravest and the most cunning. The Taung language, Mando'a, eventually became the lingua franca of all Mandalorians and the basis of their name, transliterated into Basic as "the sons and daughters of Mandalore." The Mandalorian honor code, warrior traditions, and even habit of adopting members of other species were essentially the Taung's way of life continued.
