Sinjir Rath

Characters

Sinjir Rath Velus is introduced in Chuck Wendig’s canon Aftermath Trilogy (Aftermath, Life Debt, Empire’s End) as a former Imperial loyalty officer who deserted in the confused hours after the Battle of Endor. Trained by the ISB to uncover treachery within the ranks, he carries the psychological scars of having once policed and tortured his own comrades. When he crosses paths with Norra Wexley, her son Temmin “Snap,” the bounty hunter Jas Emari, and the reprogrammed B-1 droid Mister Bones, Sinjir reluctantly joins their mission to hunt down post-Endor Imperial warlords. Cynical and self-loathing, he uses his interrogation skills, talent for disguise, and razor-sharp strategic mind to help the fledgling New Republic track Grand Admiral Rae Sloane and Gallius Rax, fight in the Liberation of Kashyyyk, and ultimately shape the outcome of the climactic Battle of Jakku.

Across the trilogy Sinjir’s arc is as much personal as it is galactic. He struggles with alcoholism, guilt, and the fear that he is incapable of genuine loyalty - fears put to the test when he falls in love with New Republic slicer-analyst Conder Kyl, making him one of the first openly gay viewpoint protagonists in Star Wars canon. By Empire’s End he proves his commitment not only to Conder (whom he proposes to) but to the ideals of the Republic, blackmailing corrupt senators to secure emergency powers for Chancellor Mon Mothma and later accepting a post in her advisory circle. Sardonic, pragmatic, and morally restless, Sinjir Rath Velus embodies the notion that redemption in Star Wars does not belong solely to Jedi and Sith; it can be won by ordinary beings willing to confront the worst parts of themselves and choose a better cause.
