The Battle of Jakku, which occurred in 5 ABY, is a momentous event in the Star Wars universe. This decisive battle took place a year and four days after the destruction of the second Death Star during the Battle of Endor, marking the end of the Galactic Civil War. A large-scale engagement, it was fought between the forces of the Galactic Empire and the New Republic, the government formed by the Rebel Alliance.
The stage for the battle was set when the Empire under the command of Counselor Gallius Rax made Jakku a primary military base, with the hidden agenda of destroying it alongside the rest of the galaxy. This huge tactical mistake allowed the New Republic forces to target it as a major strategic attack point. The New Republic forces, led by Admiral Gial Ackbar and General Lando Calrissian, managed to encircle Jakku and prepared to attack.
The Battle of Jakku was a fierce engagement, with many capital ships, starfighters and ground troops involved. The Imperial forces confronted the New Republic in space initially and engaged in ground warfare on the desert planet's surface. Both sides sustained heavy losses; however, the overwhelming numbers of the New Republic led to significant damage to the Imperial fleet.
Diplomatically, the Battle of Jakku had effects too. The New Republic War Council seized this opportunity to pressure the Empire into signing a formal peace treaty. This led to the Galactic Concordance, which detailed the terms of the Empire's surrender and ended the Galactic Civil War. It also confined the survival Imperial forces to the predetermined boundaries in the Core and Inner Rim and abolished the stormtroopers and TIE fighters.
Despite the Empire's defeat at Jakku, the battle marked the ascension of some pivotal characters, like Rae Sloane, who escaped and played a massive role in rebuilding the Empire in its new form as The First Order. In retrospect, the Battle of Jakku symbolized the final demise of the original Galactic Empire and the definitive establishment of the New Republic. This event also had long-lasting effects on the landscape of the planet Jakku, leaving it littered with the ghostly wreckage of crashed starships.
