Endor

Planets

Endor, commonly known as the Forest Moon of Endor or the Sanctuary Moon, is a fictional moon in the Star Wars universe. It first appeared in the 1983 film 'Return of the Jedi' and has since figured prominently in various books, video games, and television series set in the Star Wars franchise. The moon is most notably known as the dwelling place for the Ewoks, an intelligent species of small, furry bipeds.

Endor is portrayed predominantly with its dense, lush forest landscapes. However, it also features vast mountainous terrains, vast lakes, and small deserts. The forests are filled with a vast array of flora and fauna, including several dangerous predators. The Ewoks have adapted to their environment by constructing tree-based villages, which helps protect them from ground-based threats.

These tree-dwelling Ewoks played a significant role in the Battle of Endor, the climactic land and space-based conflict in 'Return of the Jedi'. The Ewoks, initially mistrustful of the Rebel Alliance, eventually become crucial allies, using their knowledge of Endor's rough terrains and their primitive yet effective weapons to help defeat the Imperial forces stationed on the moon.

Importantly, Endor was selected by the Emperor Palpatine as the construction site for the second Death Star. Its remote location and the protective energy shield generated from the moon's surface made it an ideal choice. However, it also became a focal point for the Rebellion's efforts to destroy this formidable weapon, culminating in the aforementioned Battle of Endor.

In the larger Star Wars lore, Endor’s importance continued after 'Return of the Jedi'. For example, in the 'Star Wars: Ewok Adventures' television movies and the animated 'Ewoks' television series, the moon and its furry inhabitants were further explored and developed. Furthermore, the moon also made appearances in various 'Star Wars' video games, such as 'Star Wars Battlefront II' and 'Star Wars: The Old Republic'.
