The Massassi Group is an integral part of the "Star Wars" mythos, often associated with the earlier days of the saga. They were a subspecies of the Sith species, known to be robust and fearsome warriors. These warriors were native to the planet of Korriban, a world deeply connected to the Dark Side of The Force, and later migrated to the Sith home-world, Ziost. According to the lore, the Massassi subspecies began to dwindle as a result of the numerous wars fought by the Sith.
The Dark Jedi Exar Kun is a pivotal figure in the history of the Massassi. Following his fall to the dark side, Kun sought out the ancient knowledge and power of the Sith. His pursuit led him to Yavin 4 - one of the moons of the gas giant Yavin - where he enslaved the Massassi tribe that lived there. These enslaved Massassi were subsequently forced to construct numerous massive temples, serving as monuments to Sith glory and places of Dark Side worship.
Exar Kun further experimented on the Massassi, using Sith alchemy to manipulate their forms and imbuing them with Dark Side energy. This led to the creation of the terrifying creatures known as the Sith Spawn. These dark rites led to further decline of the Massassi, leaving them as little more than monstrous servants to their Sith master.
Despite the harsh treatment and manipulation by Exar Kun, the Massassi continued to follow him. This was until the time of the Great Sith War, during which the Massassi civilization was believed to be wiped out completely. Yet, the Massassi legacy lived on, their temples and structures on Yavin 4 later becoming the base for the Rebel Alliance, and the location of the climactic final battle in Episode IV: "A New Hope".
The Massassi group also influenced the creation of one of the most popular characters in the "Star Wars" universe, Darth Maul. His species, the Zabrak, were designed with the physical features similar to the Massassi - a tribute to these legendary warriors of the Sith. Furthermore, their presence was felt even generations later in the "Star Wars" timeline as their temples on Yavin 4 were featured in a considerable number of stories across different mediums, including movies, books, and video games.
