Lando Calrissian is a fictional character in the Star Wars galaxy, first introduced in the 1980 film "The Empire Strikes Back." Created by George Lucas, Lando is portrayed by actor Billy Dee Williams in the original trilogy, as well as in the 2019 film "The Rise of Skywalker." In the standalone film "Solo: A Star Wars Story," the younger version of Lando is portrayed by Donald Glover.
Lando is originally depicted as the charming and smooth-talking administrator of Cloud City, a floating city above the planet Bespin. He is an old friend of Han Solo, played by Harrison Ford, and has a history of smuggling and other illegal activities. Lando's complex nature is revealed when he betrays Han and his friends to Darth Vader and the Empire, before ultimately redeeming himself by assisting in their escape and later joining the Rebel Alliance.
Throughout his appearances in the original trilogy, Lando plays a significant role in the war against the Empire. He becomes a General in the Rebel Alliance and helps plan and execute attacks on Imperial installations, including the Death Star II. Lando pilots the Millennium Falcon during the climactic Battle of Endor in "Return of the Jedi," where his actions help secure the destruction of the Death Star and defeat of the Empire.
Lando's backstory is further explored in the movie "Solo: A Star Wars Story," revealing that he was once a gambler and smuggler who eventually lost the Millennium Falcon to Han in a card game. The film shows his friendship with a droid named L3-37 and his involvement in a daring heist to steal valuable coaxium fuel. Glover's performance captures the essence of Williams' original portrayal while adding new depth to the character.
In the expanded Star Wars universe, Lando's character arc continues through a series of novels and comic books. He eventually settles down on Bespin and becomes the father of a daughter. However, in "The Rise of Skywalker," we learn that his daughter was abducted by the First Order as part of their plot to create an army of brainwashed soldiers. Lando joins the fight against the First Order, ultimately helping the Resistance defeat Emperor Palpatine once and for all.
Lando Calrissian has become a fan-favorite character in the Star Wars universe, celebrated for his charm, charisma, and the enduring appeal of Billy Dee Williams' and Donald Glover's performances. The character is emblematic of the theme of redemption present throughout the saga, showing that heroes can emerge from unlikely places and that personal growth and redemption are possible for everyone.
Lando Calrissian represents a complex and memorable character within the Star Wars galaxy. His journey from scoundrel to hero highlights the importance of redemption and the power of friendship, making him a beloved figure among fans and an integral part of the epic space opera that is Star Wars.
