Project Luminosity

Books

Project Luminous, now known as Star Wars: The High Republic, is a massive cross-media project that was first announced by Lucasfilm and Disney+ at Star Wars Celebration Chicago in April 2019. It was planned to be a publishing program set in the High Republic era, happening approximately 200 years before the events of the Skywalker Saga. The project brings together several popular Star Wars authors such as Charles Soule, Cavan Scott, Claudia Gray, Daniel José Older, and Justina Ireland.

The project revolves around the theme "The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It's an energy field created by all living things…" and focuses on the time when the Jedi were at their height. It presents the vast saga when the Jedi took on the role of 'knights of the round table', acting as cosmic detectives, explorers and peacekeepers with wide knowledge about The Force. It encapsulates a period in Star Wars history where peace has fostered unprecedented prosperity.

'The High Republic' inaugurated with the release of the novel 'Light of the Jedi,' written by Charles Soule. The story is a cornerstone detailing the tragic event known as 'The Great Disaster.' Following this event, the Jedi, who were spread thinly across the galaxy, had to deal with the aftermath, revealing new enemies known as 'The Nihil.' 'The Nihil' pose a serious threat to the High Republic, triggering the primary conflict in the saga.

The novels and comic books of The High Republic feature interconnected narratives across various platforms. However, each book or series stands alone, meaning that a reader can choose a particular era or medium and still enjoy a satisfying Star Wars experience. This is a unique aspect that sets the project apart from other storylines in the Star Wars universe.

Project Luminous, or The High Republic, also distinguishes itself by having a significant focus on representation and diversity. The stories incorporate a multitude of different species, genders, and roles, offering a broader view of the universe far away from the Skywalker lineage. The events that have taken place in this period promise a time full of potential for great storytelling and character exploration, demonstrating the enduring richness of the Star Wars universe.
