Toydarians

Species

Toydarians are a species prominently featured in the Star Wars universe, first introduced in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. Known for their hovering flight, these species originate from the mucky Hutt-Space planet Toydaria. They have leathery skin, long snouts, webbed feet, and wings that allow them to levitate or fly. The most famous Toydarian in the Star Wars franchize is Watto, the slavery trader who owned Anakin and Shmi Skywalker.

Although their bodies are small and stubby, Toydarians possess a surprising degree of innate physical capability due to strenuous living conditions on their home planet. Their hover flight is a result of a naturally occurring gas-filled bladder within their bellies, enabling a Toydarian to stay airborne nearly all the time. This ability, combined with nimble hands, made them skilful mechanics.

Toydarians are noted for their resistance to the Jedi mind tricks, an ability that is, in most species, quite powerful. This characteristic was first demonstrated when Qui-Gon Jinn tried to convince Watto to accept Republic credits for a T-14 hyperdrive generator. However, Jedi could still influence them by subtly altering their thought processes.

The Toydarian society is organized in a monarchical system, where the king holds a significant amount of power. This hierarchical society means the social standing of Toydarians is determined by birthright, rather than individual merit. Throughout The Clone Wars, the Toydarian king had to carefully navigate the political landscape to ensure the safety and well-being of his planet and its inhabitants.

Toydarians have made appearances in all forms of Star Wars content, from films, animations, to novels and comic books. They have thus firmly entrenched themselves as a popular member of the galaxy's diverse assortment of alien species. Their characterization often leans towards the cunning and crafty, perhaps due to their notable immunity to mental manipulation.
