R4-P17, commonly known as R4, is an R4-series astromech droid that has a similar function to the more famous R2-D2. R4 was designed and used for repairs, navigational assistance, and various other tasks that require technical expertise.

Created by Industrial Automaton (a fictional company in the Star Wars universe), R4-P17 was assigned to Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi during his service to the Galactic Republic. R4 played a vital role in supporting Obi-Wan during many missions, including the Battle of Geonosis in Episode II: Attack of the Clones and the Battle of Coruscant in Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Physically, R4-P17 sports a red and silver-gray color scheme and is equipped with a variety of tools and gadgets to aid in diverse situations. Despite being an R4-series droid, R4-P17 has the distinct dome-shaped head seen on R2-series droids. This was a modification made by Obi-Wan Kenobi, as the result of the destruction of R4-P17's original head in a battle.

R4-P17's key abilities include repairing starfighters, accessing various computer interfaces, and handling navigational data. Furthermore, the resourceful astromech droid has an exceptional knowledge of starship systems and their technical specifications. R4 would fiercely guard Obi-Wan's starfighter when he was away, and would even undertake dangerous tasks without hesitation, reaffirming the bond between the Jedi and his droid companion.

Tragically, R4-P17 met its end during the opening battle of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. During the intense aerial fight over Coruscant, R4-P17 was in the back seat of Obi-Wan Kenobi's starfighter providing assistance when the droid was suddenly and brutally decapitated by a buzz droid. The loss of R4-P17 was certainly felt by Obi-Wan, but also served as a reminder of the harsh reality of the Clone Wars.

In the Star Wars universe, R4-P17 stands as a testament to the bravery and resourcefulness of astromech droids. R4-P17's contributions were critical to the success of numerous missions during the Clone Wars and the droid will always be remembered as a vital ally to the Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi.
