Created by author Timothy Zahn, Thrawn first appeared in the 1991 novel "Heir to the Empire", one of the "Thrawn Trilogy" books. Following Disney+'s acquisition of Lucasfilm and the subsequent re-classification of the EU as non-canon "Star Wars Legends", Thrawn was reintroduced into the official Star Wars canon in the third season of the animated television series "Star Wars Rebels" in 2016.
