Finn

Characters

Finn, played by British-Nigerian actor John Boyega, is one of the central characters in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, appearing in "The Force Awakens" (2015), "The Last Jedi" (2017), and "The Rise of Skywalker" (2019). Formerly a stormtrooper in the First Order, he is designated as FN-2187 but later adopts the name Finn after his desertion and subsequent alliance with the Resistance.

Finn's story begins as one of many stormtroopers who are raised as soldiers by the First Order. Trained to be loyal and follow orders without question, Finn eventually starts to question his obedience to the First Order during a massacre of civilians in the village of Tuanul on Jakku. Traumatized by the events, he decides to leave the organization and helps Resistance pilot Poe Dameron (played by Oscar Isaac) escape captivity. It is during this escape that Poe nicknames him Finn, as a more humanizing alternative to his original designation.

Following Poe's presumed death, Finn meets Rey (played by Daisy Ridley) on Jakku and becomes involved in the overarching plot of the sequel trilogy, helping her and the other main characters discover the location of the missing Jedi, Luke Skywalker. Finn lies about his past, hoping to keep his former stormtrooper identity secret, although it is eventually revealed that he has valuable knowledge about the inner workings of the First Order, which helps the Resistance in their fight against it.

In "The Last Jedi," Finn's commitment to the Resistance and his newfound friends is tested. He attempts to strike a blow against the First Order, yet is also trying to protect Rey along the journey. Finn meets Rose Tico (played by Kelly Marie Tran), a Resistance mechanic, during a failed mission to neutralize the First Order's ability to track the Resistance's fleet. During their adventure, Finn learns more about the complex moral issues surrounding loyalty, oppression, and war profiteering.

During the events of "The Rise of Skywalker," Finn's role further expands as he rallies allies for the Resistance and seeks to destroy the revived Emperor Palpatine's fleet. He forms a stronger bond with the other characters, including Rey and Poe, while also connecting with other former stormtroopers who have defected from the First Order. It is during these events that Finn demonstrates his dedication to the cause, ultimately contributing to the defeat of the First Order and the Sith.

Throughout the sequel trilogy, Finn represents a character who must grapple with his past and find a new path. As a former stormtrooper, he faces the consequences of his choices and strives to make a difference in the galaxy, fighting for freedom against tyranny. His character's growth and development throughout the series showcases the importance of loyalty, friendship, and the belief in a better future.

Finn's character arc in the Star Wars sequel trilogy is an engaging and significant part of the narrative. His journey from First Order stormtrooper to devoted member of the Resistance adds depth and complexity to the series, while also highlighting important themes related to redemption and the struggle against oppressive regimes.
