The Geonosians are an insectoid species native to the harsh and desertic planet of Geonosis, a part of the Star Wars universe. They are known for their exceptional architectural and mechanical engineering skills and are responsible for the conception and initial stages of production of the first Death Star. Geonosians have a highly structured caste society, comprising of workers, soldiers, aristocrats, and the queen. Each caste plays specific roles within Geonosian society, from carrying out physical labor and defending the hive, to policymaking and reproduction. The species communicates through a language known as Geonosian, which consists of a combination of clicks, shrieks, and other insectoid sounds.
Physically, they resemble humanoid ants or termites and are known for their hard chitinous exoskeletons, which provide them protection from the harsh environmental elements on their home planet. They have wings, but only the aristocrat caste utilizes them for flight. The other castes have their wings clipped and are relied on the ground. The Geonosians played a major role in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, especially in "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones," where they were seen as key allies of the Confederacy of Independent Systems during The Clone Wars. Their planet, Geonosis, was the site of the first major battle of this Interstellar conflict.
