Movies

Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker is the final installment in the nine-part "Skywalker Saga" and it was released in 2019. Directed by J.J. Abrams, this epic space opera was jointly produced by Lucasfilm and Bad Robot Productions, and distributed by Walt Disney+ Studios Motion Pictures. In terms of the overall chronological storyline in Star Wars, it follows The Last Jedi in the sequel trilogy.

The story resumes a year after the events of The Last Jedi. Emperor Palpatine, played by Ian McDiarmid, who was thought to be dead, returns and promises a new Empire. General Leia Organa, portrayed by the late Carrie Fisher, organizes a force to confront him, while her son and now Supreme Leader Kylo Ren, played by Adam Driver, is also drawn towards the Emperor. Bright and youthful Resistance members like Rey, Finn and Poe Dameron come together for this cause, trying to ensure the survival of the Resistance against the First Order.

The heart of the film is Rey's journey of self-discovery. Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, is still puzzled about her identity and lineage. She's struggling with her training as the last Jedi and finds herself torn between her loyalty to the Resistance and her complex relationship with Kylo Ren. The story introduces some new characters but also brings many familiar faces, such as the droids and Chewbacca, adding to the texture and nostalgia.

The Rise of Skywalker stands out as a film of intense spectacle and relentless action. Noteworthy elements include visually detailed and stunning lightsaber duels, dogfights in space, and a climactic naval battle. The music score, composed by John Williams, introduces new themes but also reincorporates the original music, adding an emotive undercurrent to the narrative.

Upon release, the film generated varied critical reactions. Some praised its celebration of the saga, fast pace, visual effects, and performances, while others criticized its narrative, character arcs, and perceived departure from the themes and plot of its predecessor, The Last Jedi. Still, it clinched commercial success, grossing over a billion dollars worldwide.

The Rise of Skywalker provides a conclusion to a story arc that spanned more than four decades, offering a sense of closure to the beloved Star Wars saga. Heralded as the "end of an era", it is a testament to the enduring appeal of the Star Wars universe and its ability to captivate audiences across generations.
