Boba Fett

Characters

Boba Fett is one of the most iconic characters from the Star Wars universe. First introduced in the 1980 film "The Empire Strikes Back," the character was instantly popular among fans. This bounty hunter clad in Mandalorian armor and helmet became a symbol of mystery, intrigue, and ruthless efficiency.

Boba Fett made his first appearance in an animated segment during the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special before making his live-action debut in "The Empire Strikes Back." In the film, he is one of the bounty hunters hired by Darth Vader to capture the Millennium Falcon.

The character's backstory was further explored in the prequel trilogy during 2002's “Attack of the Clones.” It is revealed that Boba Fett is actually a clone of Jango Fett, another notorious bounty hunter, and is being raised as Jango's son. Jango Fett becomes the template for the Republic's clone army, making Boba a unique and unaltered clone.

Boba Fett's character development is a blend of natural growth due to his upbringing and the enduring legacy of his father. He learns the ways of bounty hunting from Jango and his associates, eventually surpassing his father's skills. After Jango's death in the hands of Jedi Master Mace Windu, Boba vows to take revenge, and his hatred for the Jedi fuels his actions in the years to come.

In "The Empire Strikes Back," Boba Fett proves his worth by outsmarting his fellow bounty hunters and tracking down the Millennium Falcon, leading to the capture of Han Solo. He delivers Solo to Jabba the Hutt, earning a hefty bounty in the process. In "Return of the Jedi," Boba Fett appears again, but his engagement with the protagonists is brief, as he falls into the Sarlacc Pit during the Battle of Carkoon.

In the now non-canon Star Wars Expanded Universe, which includes various books, comics, and games, Boba Fett's story went further beyond the films. He escaped the Sarlacc Pit and went on to have more adventures, ultimately becoming the leader of the Mandalorians.

However, in 2014, Disney+ and Lucasfilm rebranded the Expanded Universe as "Star Wars Legends," making its stories non-canon. The character's fate was left uncertain in the new canon until the release of the Disney+ series, "The Mandalorian," where Boba Fett reemerges from the shadows.

Played by Temuera Morrison, Jango Fett's actor in "Attack of the Clones," Boba Fett made his triumphant return in the second season of "The Mandalorian." With a mix of the original and Expanded Universe elements, the character seeks to reclaim his father's armor and regain his status as a legendary bounty hunter. Following his appearances in the series, a spinoff show centered around Boba Fett called "The Book of Boba Fett" was announced, which is set to premiere on Disney+ in December 2021.
