Beru Whitesun Lars is a secondary character in the Star Wars universe, first appearing in the 1977 film "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope". She is the wife of Owen Lars and the adoptive aunt of Luke Skywalker, the main protagonist of the original trilogy. Beru is portrayed by actress Bonnie Piesse in the prequel films "Attack of the Clones" (2002) and "Revenge of the Sith" (2005), and by Shelagh Fraser in the original 1977 film.
Beru was born on the desert planet Tatooine, part of the Outer Rim Territories of the galaxy. Raised on a moisture farm, Beru eventually fell in love with and married Owen Lars, the son of moisture farmer Cliegg Lars. The couple continued to work on the farm and lived together in relative peace for many years. Their lives were dramatically altered, however, with the arrival of the infant Luke Skywalker in 19 BBY (Before The Battle of Yavin).
After the fall of the Jedi Order and the rise of the Galactic Empire, the Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi entrusted the infant Luke Skywalker, the son of Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala, with Owen and Beru. As Luke's adoptive parents, they raised him far from the watchful eyes of Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader. Beru was depicted as being loving and supportive of Luke, often serving as a confidante and encouraging his dreams of a life beyond Tatooine.
As young Luke grew older, his dreams of leaving Tatooine and joining the wider galaxy intensified, particularly after he met the droids C-3PO and R2-D2. Beru and Owen attempted to dissuade Luke from leaving their moisture farm to join the Rebellion, but the decision was eventually taken out of their hands. Luke discovers the burned-out ruins of his home and the charred remains of Owen and Beru, murdered by Imperial stormtroopers searching for the droids.
The tragic death of Owen and Beru serves as a catalyst for Luke's decision to join the Rebel Alliance, propelling him on his journey to become a Jedi Knight and, ultimately, to restore balance to The Force. The characters of Owen and Beru have significant importance to the overall narrative of the Star Wars saga because of their influence on Luke Skywalker's upbringing and their place in the broader Skywalker family history.
In the expanded Star Wars universe, particularly in novels and comic books published prior to the Disney+ acquisition of the franchise, Beru's character is further explored, offering additional details of her life on Tatooine and relationships with other characters. However, many of these stories have been deemed non-canon or of "Legends" status within the new official continuity established by Disney and Lucasfilm.
While Beru Whitesun Lars is not a central character in the Star Wars saga, her role in the upbringing of Luke Skywalker and the protection of the Next Generation of Jedi cannot be understated. Along with her husband Owen, she represents the selflessness and courage of ordinary people who played a crucial part in shaping the galaxy's Destiny.
