Hello and welcome to episode 47 of the 11 Parsecs Podcast. My name's Eric, here with my good buddy John.

Hello all you cats and kittens!

We're on season 3 though, we're getting to the back half of season 3, which is good.

I'm not saying I'm getting sick of Clone Wars, but I'm going to be happy when we move on to maybe some even books, maybe some comics and stuff like that.

But I'm not saying that these episodes aren't pretty decent compared to previous episodes.

But tonight we're talking about episodes 18 and 19, that are actually a three episode arc in season 3, that is about the Citadel.

So let's dive in, but first before we do, we always have to talk about what brews we're drinking. What are you drinking, John?

It's going to be pretty obvious when you hear it, why I chose this beer, but I have chosen the Breckenridge Vanilla Porter.

It's going to be pretty obvious, wouldn't it?

Oh, absolutely. What else would you crave on a hot, humid evening?

It is hot and humid today.

So today, in John and I's county, our kids got out of school. So this is the very first day of summer for kids.

And it reached 91, I think, today.

Freaking hot.

It is hot in the ATL. Like, it is really hot.

Like, I am kind of amazed and I'm hoping that this isn't like a Harbinger for the rest of the summer because, man, it's going to be brutal if so.

I think we are in for a brutal summer. I think it is going to be hot and steamy.

So we relentless.

We always talk about the geekery and one of the things that I'm a big geek around, and you are too, is about the weather.

And I was reading a NOAA thing today, an article put out by NOAA, that they said we could get up to 33 named storms this year for hurricanes.

That is crazy.

That is crazy.

Yeah, what is the average? Like a dozen?

Well, it's been rising, of course, over the last couple of years with global warming and everything.

I think that, I'd say in the past 10 years, and I'm just guessing.

I'm thinking about the chart that I saw on the thing.

I'm thinking that, generally, you are looking at the mid-20s, usually.

Oh, that many, okay.

Yeah, over the past 10 years.

I mean, back in the 80s when we were growing up.

It wasn't anywhere near that, I don't think.

Maybe on an odd year or something, I'm not sure.

Okay, well, you are drinking the vanilla Porter, which makes sense.

Wait, wait, wait, we've got to talk about this a little bit.

A vanilla Porter on a hot day?

Yeah.

It was in the fridge, and now it's going to be in my belly.

I know, but that Porter to me is like cold winter night.

That's a winter beer.

Yes, yeah.

And I didn't get around to it, so it's still in the fridge.

And I looked at it, and I thought, it's your time, buddy.

It's your time to shine.

And I've had that vanilla Porter, and it's very excellent.

But the Cryo Ranger is the one that's kind of like the little ice wizard holding the little white flame.

My dad gave me one probably over, I don't know, maybe like three or four months ago.

And I'd never had one, and I was like, oh, this is pretty darn good.

And since then, I've been buying them off and on.

You know, whenever I see the six packs at the grocery store or something like that.

But yeah, it's a pretty good beer.

you but you thought it was better than what's the other stuff we watched for

the the more so reaction but the but the first episode was fantastic and then it

just went straight down hill

okay fair fair fair but

but i think that that that three episode arts couldn't come to be i guess

maybe that's the end of the seasons and how they do it is going to fill the

front i don't it regardless

we're in the middle of a we just started this part of the body to nineteen which

is

uh... to brand new

uh... episodes at the front of the arc and it's about

master even peel who i'd like recognized him a little bit

yet but that i didn't recognize you know i mean like it's like oh yeah i think

i've seen this guy like in like the Jedi Council or something scenes for the

movies and stuff but

i really didn't

recognize him

as a whole as anything we've ever seen a story about how do you like

no not do i i take you mean yeah i recognize them but yes i don't

i don't think we've had a focus on him

yes i agree to get a focus yet but that's part of the state

uh... so let's start off with a person eighteen it's the beginning of this arc

i feel like we're thrown into a pretty quick

lately it was it was not it was not a lot of backstory like build-up it was

pretty much

evan peels been captured

architect master of the people at it

Jedi Master even peel

has been captured

and he's been captured because

uh... he uh... knows the hyper lanes or he discovered the hyper lanes

uh... which could give

either side of the war kind of an advantage for both of them

and uh...

of course the the Separatists have taken over this

what used to be a jedi jail and i had to do a little research on this is called

the Citadel

and uh... it was built by the jedi to house road jedi

and of course you know the general that so they know you know all the different

you know things that they need to put in there too

neutralize anybody trying to escape this jail

and uh...

and evens been been pulled back to this jail because the Separatists have taken

over the jail

and since the Separatists have taken over the jail they run the place

uh...

i don't know what what did you think of this episode it was very different in my

opinion about i'm not going to make sure you understand something no hot takes

going on but i don't

this early know that i would call it good

i would say it's a very different episode

what really threw me off was the uh...

what what what what's it with the basically the warden

yeah

you know uh... what was the

O.C. Sobeck

O.C. Sobeck

okay yeah

rolls off the tongue

so he is so

cartoonishly over the top

one hundred percent both both the way they made him look

and in his

demeanor

just throws me off every time it's hard to it's it's really hard to take

so i have in my notes

why does everyone sound italian or russian new yorker in this show today

because you had you had even

the new jedi guy even peel

and then O.C. Sobeck of course was like over like you said completely over the

top

he sounds a little russian like he's like this russian jailer guy

and the jedi guy sounds like like this italian mobster kind of guy it was very

weird the voice work

i'm not saying it was bad and i don't want to criticize anybody's actual you

know voice work put into this

but i don't think that the characters matched

the the

the voices that were used

you know what i mean

and it threw me off

that actually opens up an interesting line of discussion because it seems

kind of

random when you hear a character

have for example uh... an aussie accent

or uh... New Zealand a kiwi accent

or an irish accent or uh...

a lot of english accents

i wonder is that

is it just hey show up with whatever your voice is and there you go or are

they

purposely picking that

i don't know the answer

yeah i don't want to venture into that whole uh... george lucas uh...

racism kind of

like well

well the thing that like he made the Nemoidians the dudes the

made them look like asian characters like not it's not racist i shouldn't say

racist that was a terrible term to use

the the george lucas uh... stereotyping maybe

where he would put

uh... a language and a

Look against maybe something that you would see in the world, which is not necessarily bad, but you remember the whole hoopla, whatever Episode one came out that was like, the Neimoidians are Asians.

And well, OK, OK, let me let me just nip that in the bud and carve that off, because that's not what I'm talking about at all.

I'm talking about regular people, you know, not crazy aliens, just people with discernible, clear Earth accents like Irish.

Yeah. Or or Australian. Scottish. Sure. Why? I would love to understand how that comes about.

Is it a decision or is it, you know, that that's the voice, that's the voice actor's voice?

And they just said, yeah, that's fine. You don't have to do an American accent or British. Just go with it.

I have no inside information on this, but I have a feeling that there is something like a and it could be just a CSA like like you see in the movies, the casting, the head casting person.

Pretty positive there's a voice casting person of that stature in almost any animated show, I would hope.

You know what I mean? And they and they and they have to say, I don't have five people in here with different accents.

I want this character to have something like an Irish accent. Bring me five people with Irish accents. That's my guess. Right.

I mean, well, am I overthinking it? Possibly. Possibly. So where that takes me is when I hear a clear, a strong accent, it throws me out a little bit.

It's like, why would this person in a galaxy far, far away have an Irish accent? OK, but I'm saying that as an American.

Yeah. So if you're Irish and you have, you know, Han Solo show with a good old American accent, that's totally how Han Solo sounds, by the way.

Yeah, totally. Does that throw you out? Does that throw them out the way that, you know, Goiter, you know, would throw me out?

Did you say Goiter? Yeah, it's the only word I could think of. That's a good choice, I guess.

Yeah, I don't know. I don't know if it's like to appeal to different areas of the world with the show itself. You know what I mean?

Like, like I can see myself in that character. So at least I know that I'm part of this, you know, that kind of thing.

I don't know. That's a good question. I understand the fundamental aspect of what you're asking now.

And I don't know. I still have a feeling that the casting person for the voices is like, bring me five people.

This person has this character in the show has an Irish accent. So if that's the case, I want to understand why does that character have an Irish accent?

Are you just spinning a wheel? You know, riding in direction? I don't know. Yeah, I don't know.

Why? Okay, what the challenge would be, dear listeners, as well as to you, come up with an example where the accent truly helped define and further a character.

It really clicked, it did something, it served a purpose, a use, a plot point or something. Do you understand what I'm saying?

Yeah, no, I get it.

For the most part, you could take anybody that has an Irish accent. I don't know why I'm picking on the Irish so much.

And you could swap it with an Australian or vice versa. It has no impact at all.

So I think that as Americans, and I truly believe this, we look at a English accent as a little more intelligent.

Posh. It's posh.

It's posh. It's a little more refined. And I think that when you look at Obi-Wan Kenobi, you look at Qui-Gon Jinn, you look at those characters as like, it's not us, it's not American accent, it's something a little more refined.

You know what I mean? And I think that that may be why, you know, like Sir Alec Guinness was chosen at the very beginning of, you know, 50 years ago or whatever.

Like, I don't know. Yeah, that's my guess.

That serves a purpose. That serves a purpose. But that is a well-known trait of English accents to us Americans.

Yep, 100%.

Everybody knows that. And it's just instant elevation if you have a character with a British accent.

So let's flip the card there. Do British people look at Han Solo as a rogue more because he has an American accent?

I think if you have an American accent, yeah, there are definite stereotypes.

You have an American accent, you can be that cowboy figure. It's more believable.

You know, you're not going to have Nigel Tufton, you know, be a rogue, a lovable rogue.

Nigel could. He could do anything he wanted to.

He could do anything he wanted to.

His gout.

Yeah, I get what you're saying, and I agree with you.

Now, I would break it down even further.

I always, and this may be just me as a Southerner, you know, I always look at Luke as this kind of, like, Midwestern accent.

You know, like he was playing...

The standard accent.

Yeah, like a standard American Midwestern accent.

Western accent. Yeah, clean American accent. And then Han was always the kind of like, he wasn't

southerner. He was not a southerner. He was very, but you could tell he was like, I don't know, I hate

saying the word West Coast-ish. But like, like, I got that vibe, like, from the way he said certain

words. Do you think that that is intentional? I mean, do you think that that was like back then?

Do you think that they were like, okay, you don't you just think that that's how they play the

characters? That was their voice, or those were their voices. Gotcha. They weren't putting on

airs.

Okay, fair enough. Yeah, fair enough. And this leads us this leads us a little bit to kind of

the like, I won't say like the cliffhanger, but the big kind of like reveal, in my opinion, at

least I and I've never watched this, this, you know, this episode before for 18. But we get to

Evan Peel. So they, so Obi Wan, Ahsoka ends up, you know, going along with him. Ahsoka, Obi Wan,

and Anakin both break into the Citadel, through cool means, you know, it's, it's pretty neat. They

get into the to the Citadel, and they have to rescue Bastard Evan Peel. They get down, even

Peel's down like in, you know, like the basement or whatever. They get down there, they rescue him,

and they're like, all right, we got to go. You got the codes. We need to leave. And he said, No, I

broke the codes in half. I memorized half of them, and the captain of my ship memorized the other

half of them. And you have to have both of us to know all of them. And that was planned. Like we

wanted to do that so that I couldn't reveal everything. He couldn't reveal everything. And

that was the that was the whole plan. Brilliant plan. I liked it. But then we get down to rescue

the captain who's also there. And who is it? Tarkin.

Tarkin. I totally didn't see that coming.

I was surprised, completely surprised. And it made the episode way more enjoyable for me, at least

because I was like, Whoa, okay, I got it. Now. I see where we're at. And but again, Tarkin, same

thing. You have this you have this like, like this pompous, like, like arrogant voice in him that I

associate with that. You know, the way that he's the way that he talks, you know what I mean? Like,

like, it's just like, it's, it was perfect. And that leads and I really wasn't even thinking about

talking about him until you know, or thinking about talking about his accent until we got on

this discussion. But again, it leads itself to your thing, the thing where it's like, as an

American, I sit there and I think, Oh, this guy's very well educated. He's, you know, he went to the

best schools you could go to as a captain, you know, blah, blah, blah. Inherently, only because he talks

like that. And also, you know, his words and his, you know, his language and everything, you know,

and the script, of course. But uh, but it leads to that. And I also, it's a good, it's a good, it's a

good example. Maybe that's the best way to say it.

Well, that ties into, I believe it was, oh, gosh, I want to say Volvo, but why would it be Volvo? There

was a car commercial, a car manufacturer put out a commercial with three, like leading British

actors.

Aston Martin? Was it Aston Martin? Or Jaguar? It was Jaguar. I bet it was Jaguar.

Yeah, I bet it was Jaguar.

It was a Jag.

And you know, the car, you know what I was talking about.

I know, the flag in the helicopter.

The best villains.

Yep. The flag in the helicopter. Yep.

Yes. And that, that works too. A sophisticated, refined British accent makes a wonderful

villains voice.

Yep. 100% agree with that.

And Tarkin, Tarkin totally plays into that. I thought, initially, from the jump, I thought they

were going to, or they were portraying Tarkin as not necessarily a bad guy.

And I thought, well, that's what happened to him then.

But you start to get hints as, as the episode progresses that, yeah, he's, he's, he's

ruthless. He's not messing around.

And also, too, I thought it was really neat the way that they weaved him and Anakin's story in

together. And I may be getting a little bit more into 19.

And let's go ahead and kind of start talking about 19, too.

Well, hold on. No, no, no, no, no, no, no.

We're not done with this. Sorry.

So, first of all, this is, you know, again, called Episode 18, The Citadel.

It really should be called, like, A New Hope Callbacks, chock full.

You know, there were so many, and not just A New Hope, the original trilogy.

So many callbacks.

Starting with the carbon freezing.

Yep. And the music.

Did you hear the music? I had that in my notes.

It's just so, just so many callbacks.

And then what, what really sent me down a rabbit hole, and I told you I want to talk

about this, they, at one point they're shooting, you know, like the, the things that you

see when they take over the detention block in A New Hope.

The cameras and the, and the little, the little stupid triangles on the wall.

And I've never, my whole life since seeing that movie, known what those things are.

What are they? Do you know what I'm talking about?

The rounded triangles that are on the wall.

They showed, they showed, like, they blast a camera and then they blast like a, like a

door panel or something.

And then they blast these triangles.

It's like, it's like what you see when you go, like, to see, like, a Mountain climbing

wall. It's like those little pegs that are in the Mountain, right?

That's what you're talking about. Sure.

Yeah. Which, which I never really noticed until I looked at some screenshots.

But yes, I just knew them as the triangle, the fat triangles.

Like, what are these fat triangles?

And it took me a while, but I was able to get to the thing that I sent you, which is

they are laser projectors.

and you have the this customizable card game that sent me down a rabbit hole because i'd never heard of a ccg before i assume you have yep i have yeah so do tell what is a customizable card game so well just to make sure i'm following the customizable card games that i think you're referring to is the the the um it's it so okay so magic the gathering i think would be probably the biggest one because you customize your deck to play with um that's the grand enema of them all but the one that

you reference that you sent me is the star wars customizable card game that came out late 90s i

think late i think it's early early 2000s late probably right around you know Episode one and

whatnot yes yeah so i want to say late 90s which was when i was in high school and i played it a

little bit i played way more magic the gathering than that there was a second version though that

came out probably it was definitely after 9 11 it was probably around that has a different name

like tcg or something a tradable card game tradable card yeah tradable yeah tradable card

game and it's it's basically they're both i mean if i'm being completely honest i think

they're both just mimicking magic the gathering success um which is basically like you have a

course set um that course set everybody can play with uh you know for that given time period for

like magic together it's usually i think like two years three years now and then you have these add-on

sets those add-on sets make it customizable because you can take your deck create whatever

you want with your deck and then you can add in different aspects and different kind of strategies

from these uh other like expansion sets but the thing about the expansion sets is after like say

two or three years you can't use that anymore in tournament play so it's just it's a constant it's

a the customizable aspect of it is that is that every year you're looking at new cards and new

strategies to play with this course set and even the course set changes over like four or five

years um but but that's kind of the customizable aspect of it when they say the the star wars

trading card game i don't really know what the difference would be because i played both of them

and i felt like it was pretty much the same thing a customizable card game uh i don't i don't i don't

think that that was anything really all that much more different but just think of it as like

i'm Eric i get to not only take me and you have a whole set of cards that are the same but

my strategy may be with these 50 cards and your strategy may be with those 50 cards and we're

gonna play each other okay very good so um you you did you look at the link that i sent you

i did yep yep yeah that that i'm just blown away that that exists and tells me what those

triangles were on the walls so it the the end result is that there were a lot of callbacks

so tons tons of callbacks well it's funny because i didn't really notice it when i was watching the

episode like i saw them shoot stuff and like i guess i'm just used to like so so well let me

take that back whenever they're trying to climb up the wall in this episode and they show those

things but like way bigger you know like with the lightning like like they're like minds that

are like flashing with lightning and everything and i think there's actually a a storm trooper

or a clone trooper that gets killed uh on one of them he does a little willheim screams he's fallen

um but like but like those were like bigger versions of them and that was the only thing

that i i i noticed when watching these but then when you sent me that link i was like oh yes there

is a ton of those there is a bunch of callbacks to it and i think that i remember them with the

with the land mines and the laser things and then i also remember them i think shooting a

door panel right like they shot the door panel thing that's like the classic like the red thing

and we'll post all this on our discord channel and all the show notes um because John had some

really good examples in this article he sent me that's like it shows like and what was impressive

too was like i feel like i've only seen those from like the side you know what i mean like in

the show and the movies like you only see like you only see it when they shoot you know like

from the side and it blows up and that's it but like those the cards that you sent me from the

tradable card game they were like full-on like pictures like up front like like they i don't

know if they like rebuilt them for specifically for that card game to take pictures of it or

maybe there has to be a frame or two somewhere in in the movie that shows that there's no way that

they reconstructed that i would yeah or they just have tons of film and they just went back and found

them you know in the film right you know like different shot yeah different shots we had yeah

but uh but yeah you sent me that and i was just like and it was funny because like i i started

reading it and i was like what is John getting at like what is so interesting and then i just

kept finding myself reading that article and i was like oh my god this is this is amazing like

like like whoever the uh the lore smith is that keeps up with this stuff that makes sure that it's

you know the same from movies that happened 40 years ago to like to the clone like and you know

to be fair these Clone Wars episodes debuted in like 2011 so you know it was still 10 15 years

ago but um yeah i was pretty impressed i was like this is good and the person that wrote the article

was pretty impressive too i was like all right yeah you did your research math it's pretty good

the funny thing is that for my entire life uh because i didn't know what what these things were

i mean i know when they break into the detention block and they get get called out they start

blasting and they blast the cameras that makes sense yeah and you blast the door panels that

makes sense yeah i never knew what the triangles were so for me my entire life i it was like they

just sort of decided to wreck the place which is right

How do I ask you this question?

Those kind of throwbacks to me are very fun and stuff that I want to look up and figure

out, whereas it's not the gratuitous throwbacks that you see in some of the most recent Star

Wars shows.

Yes.

Totally acceptable.

I don't know how to define those.

Even the carbon freezing, which I really, it just seemed pandering, which is what you're

saying.

It's like, you know, fan service!

Even the carbon freezing served a point.

It served to further the plot.

They had a reason to do it.

They threw in things like, I can't remember who said it, but I don't want to be a wall

decoration.

I mean, really?

Well, there's something that we touched on in the second episode that I really want to

But I do want to mention, I went back and looked, and the character that does the freezing

is Urk Zalas, who is the character that does the freezing and other things, too.

The character's name.

Just say Urk Zalas.

Let's jump up to episode 19, and the reason I want to get to this is I felt like this

was a very...

I haven't seen the third episode in this series.

I felt like this episode didn't move us along the plot that much.

It just felt like it was kind of like, you guys have two episodes, let's make it three.

It didn't feel like anything progressed all that much.

I wasn't as impressed with this episode as I definitely was with 18.

I liked 18.

I thought 18 was good.

It was kind of like a new serial kind of thing.

18 was good.

I have basically no notes on 19, because it just didn't do anything.

It really didn't do anything.

I will say, because I think we blew past the end of 18, where Echo blew up, and I'm watching

it, and I'm thinking, wait a minute, Echo, why do I know that name, Echo?

Do you know why?

I mean, you probably know everything about Echo, but why would I know about Echo?

Because you like Bad Batch, isn't it?

Wasn't he a character in The Bad Batch?

He was in Bad Batch.

That's right.

Exactly.

Yeah.

So that was weird.

Yeah.

That's his death.

Watch him die.

Years before I discovered him.

That's exactly what I was going to say.

So for those that don't know, I have not watched Bad Batch yet.

John absolutely loves The Bad Batch, and every time we get together to talk about stuff,

he always wants me to watch it, and I'm going to start watching it.

I beg you.

I fall to my knees, and what do you do?

You spurn me.

This is a very good example of you getting attached to a character that I really don't

know that much about.

I mean, I knew who he was, but I didn't know that much about ... But it shows the passion

for you in that show.

You know what I mean?

I can see-

He's not directly to Echo, but he's a character I know.

I figure you're on the other side of the mic right now, because we recorded at our houses.

You're on the other side of the mic, lips quivering, a little bit of wet around the

eyelids, and go, did you notice what happened to Echo?

Because I know you, and I know you're so attached to those characters.

Okay, yeah, but let's jump into 19.

There's nothing that goes on.

There's nothing.

I think ... Here's my notes from episode 19, and I'm not lying to you.

I'm going to read my notes.

My notes from episode 19, Obi and Peele go one way, Tarkin, Anakin, and Ahsoka go another,

because they want to split them up again because of the thing.

Okay, fine.

Because they want to have an A story and a B story.

That's why you split them up.

Exactly.

Yeah, and you waste more time.

Why does Doku look at his nails?

Did you notice that whenever he goes to talk to Doku, the Osi, whatever his name is ... Oh,

what was that guy's name?

The warden guy?

Yeah, Osi Sobek.

Whenever he ... Osi Sobek is the warden guy, and he goes and he talks to a hologram image

of Doku.

Yeah.

Doku's turned around looking at his nails, and it was very weird, because I'm like, why

is ... Doku doesn't seem like the guy that cares about his nails, but anyways.

That's something a haughty villain would do.

Yeah.

You're beneath me.

You're not worth my time.

And then the only other notes that I have are this appeared on March 4th, 2011, and

then there was one cool line in that thing where Obi-Wan gets captured, and he says to

Osi, he goes, oh, you had ... I didn't know you looked like this, you had such a soft

voice.

Right.

And that was pretty ...

Yeah, I propose, because we spent quite a bit of time on 18, that we just move on to

Vision 2.

We watched Season 3, Episode 18, Season 3, Episode 18, and then we're also watching

the Vision Season 2.

Vision Season 2 came out almost a year ago, I think.

And we decided to take a break from The Clone Wars stuff and start watching this.

I loved the first episode of Season 2.

Absolutely loved it.

You liked it.

You thought it was pretty good.

I liked it a lot.

What are you talking about?

It was beautifully done.

And, no, I did like it a lot.

Okay, so I'm eager to see what you think about this one.

This one, to me, and I'm just putting this out there just so we can discuss, we'll discuss

it quickly.

And then you have this circle medallion thing that you're like, oh, her family's given her.

This is probably something that's going to catch up with her, that kind of thing.

And then 180 at the end, which I loved.

I absolutely loved it.

You get there, and in my notes, I genuinely have.

They get to this cave.

It's Screecher's Reach.

And everybody knows this is going to be a crazy Ghost thing.

There's four kids.

They walk into the thing.

There is an absolutely horrifying scream in the audio to this episode.

It is a-

And visually.

And visually.

And so it says, well, this is terrifying.

It is.

It was absolutely terrifying.

And then you have like two little, little kids, one older big guy, you know, the big

tank guy.

It's like a little archetype for AD&D.

And then you have her, who wants to continue into this cave.

The other three are like, we're leaving.

This is too scary for us.

And the ending was great.

I loved the ending.

When she tells them, because the cave is collapsing, she says, go, go, go.

And she stays behind.

And it's like, why does this kid have a death wish?

Yep, exactly.

Why?

Because she apparently just wants to die.

I mean, she's a slave.

Why go back?

Yeah, 100%.

She wants to die.

She talks about the beginning, though.

She talks about, I feel like I'm meant for more.

Okay, sure.

I think I probably missed that line then.

Yeah, yeah.

Because I was just wondering, she's just giving up.

She's like, yeah, I'm going to find out what you are or die.

She's talking to the guy when the two little kids are playing at the campfire.

And she's talking to the older guy.

And he goes, we all know that you think you're meant for more.

And she's like, yeah, I feel like I'm just meant for more.

I don't know what that means.

But I'm paraphrasing, but something to that nature.

So it's not completely out of the ordinary.

That makes sense.

But that's earlier in the episode where I wasn't hooked.

I wasn't hooked until the scream and the terrifying appearance of Screecher.

And so if I can jump to the end.

If the point of an episode like this is to leave me wanting so much more information,

then they did a great job.

I have so many questions.

The writing for this was on par with the Ronan episode from season one, in my opinion.

Like I am imagining a world and multiple stories in which these characters that you know for

five minutes.

It was very, very well done.

And I did not, and I think the biggest thing about this for me was I did not believe it

was going to be good at the beginning at all.

I just sat there and I was like, all right.

Is this going to be one of those episodes that like, you know, that they just kind of got somebody

in here, it's gonna be like an artistic style, and then you're gonna have a good thing. Trivia,

the mother, or the Sith mother that comes at the very end, so these things have been out for a

year, we can, I think we can talk about spoilers a little bit if we want to. Spoiler alert, if you

don't want to talk, if you don't want to hear about it, don't listen to the next thing. So

basically what, she kills the Screecher, and the Screecher is a Sith, or at least she has a Sith

lightsaber, and she takes the lightsaber, and she walks out, and the three kids are outside the cave,

and they're suddenly visited by someone who communicates to her through this medallion that

I always felt was like a family heirloom or something like that throughout the episode.

Right. That's what you would assume.

Yeah, that's what you would assume, and it turns out that it's a Sith person that wanted her to

kill Screecher, and the Sith woman stops and says, you need to make a decision, either you come

with me and I train you, or you stay here with your friends, and she, of course, you know, leaves.

And it was a, number one, literally in my notes, I'm just like, 180, did not expect that, that was

great, that was great writing, perfect. My question to you is, do you know who voiced the Sith mother?

No, no I do not.

Angelica Houston.

Okay.

I recognized the voice, because it's kind of robotic, it's through like a robotic filter,

but I was like, I know this voice, I know this voice, how do I know this voice?

And I had to look it up, and it was Angelica Houston, so I was like,

awesome, that's pretty good.

Did not recognize the voice, and when she said, can my friends come?

The immediate harshness in the, no.

100 percent, yes, yes.

And that one response tells me, it doesn't give me a lot of hope for what's going to happen with

that kid.

Not at all, but I want to know more, I want to, like, what.

Yes.

Yeah, you got, yeah, you hit the nail on the head, if the core tenets of these,

you know, small 15 minute episodes of anime done by people from all over the world,

is just to get you to want to venture into their world more, this one was great, absolutely great.

And I did not, and again, like, I watched the first one, and I was like, I know I'm going to

love this, like, this art style is amazing.

And in this one, I'm just kind of like, eh, this art style is okay, I guess.

But then, golly, the script was just so good, so good.

It really, it's endearing, because the way it started, yes, I immediately dropped all

expectations.

It's like, eh, okay, 11 minutes, I can get through this.

Do you think that was planned?

Um, do you think that was planned?

No, I do not.

Okay, so you think that the artist, or the producers, or whoever created this,

thought they would have our attention from the beginning to the end?

she's got the amulet from her family, we'll figure all this out.

That part, I do agree with, yes.

There was that sharp contrast once she was in the collapsed cave.

crap out of you.

anger, but a lot of pain.

I assume it was a woman.

Actually, you know what I want to start with? Have you played Starfield?

Yes, I have.

Okay, how much did you play Starfield?

Starfield was one of those games and it's really weird because I usually,

like I love Skyrim and I compare it to Skyrim a lot because it feels very Skyrim-ish.

Just big open world, tons of stuff to do. I played Skyrim a lot. I probably put 120 hours

into Skyrim total over multiple OSs and I played some of the VR Skyrim. Starfield,

I think I probably only put about 15 hours into maybe? I mean, I played it,

but it got to the point where I was just kind of like, this is neat.

You know, I got some of the powers and retrieved some of the, I don't want to give it away if

you're playing it. But yeah, I mean, I got into it. I wouldn't say that like,

I think the people that really play Starfield are like 100 to 200 hours into it. Like,

it's that big of a game. That's the great part about it. But I played a decent amount to get

into the game and know what the game was about. But then I just kind of faded, if I'm being honest.

Did you get deep into the main story or were you doing other things?

I did the main story. I did side stuff, but I also did the main story. And I got... I'm trying

to think of a way to tell you the progression that I got. Let me say this. I had a power,

if that makes any sense to you. I don't know if you're playing it or not. Yeah, I had a power,

but I didn't go and collect other ones, I guess is the best way to say it.

So I'm... I think I'm about 50 hours in.

Okay. Oh, so you're... Yeah, you're really playing it then. Okay, cool.

I really wanted to play Starfield. I waited for a while. And as it turns out, they just pushed the

huge release that has made the game much better. Oh, I didn't know this. I may have to jump back

into it then. And they're going to push more releases, like to have ground vehicles and

things like that. Because it was... The original design was really kind of tedious getting around.

Yeah. And they've made it much, much better now.

Interesting. So I'm to the end of the main story, and I'm holding off on that. I'm doing other

stuff. Okay, got you. What I find fascinating about the game is... I mean, for me, it's a space,

you know, space travel and shoot them up, spaceship kind of game, and first person shooter.

But what I find fascinating reading the Starfield subreddit is people are playing this game in

wildly different ways. That's the beauty of Starfield.

That's the beauty of the game. Totally the beauty of the game. But it blows my mind that someone

can be playing this game, like true role-playing. They're truly role-playing, doing what that

character would do, not necessarily what they want to do. And you can go in and build outposts and

mine and do resources. Shipbuilding? Shipbuilding was amazing.

Elaborate shipbuilding. I can't even understand how they're doing half the stuff I see.

And then you have people just like me that are just kind of doing the main line and the quests

and things like that. So there's so much to it. Yeah, all of their games are like that. That's

what Skyrim was the same way. Fallout's are kind of like the same. It just amazes me. Yeah,

it just amazes me. How do you build something so big that it's not a game, it's multiple ways to

play a game that everybody can like? I don't know how to describe it. The easiest way to describe

it is a sandbox, but it's not a sandbox. It's a blanket. Each thread is a way you can play the

game. Every spoke on the wheel is different and the wheel turns and it just keeps turning so

everybody can play. Let's try to get all philosophical on this thing. I'm glad you're

that far into it. That's awesome. You're making me want to go play it now. You really are.

If you're familiar with it, I would jump back in just to check out the latest update because it's

such a big patch. It's interesting. I didn't feel like it was... a lot of people I think said when

it came out that... I shouldn't say a lot of people. I heard one or two people that I really

trust in gaming say that they didn't feel like it was as polished as other titles have been.

I didn't really feel like that. I felt like it was good. The storyline was good,

but now with these changes, I'm wondering if this is what was waiting on...

How do I say this? The big Cyberpunk patch. Everybody knew this was going to be coming

along and once it did come along, it shored up a lot of the things in the game.

That's a big reason why I held off because I was interested in the game, but all I read

were complaints. It's broken. It's glitched. Piece of shit. It's so hard now. Even Metacritic,

which I used to really look at as...

Like a good source of, should I pay money for this? You know what I mean? Like, is this, is this something that I'm going to enjoy for, and I always compare it to beer. I always compare it to beer. Like, when you and I go out to eat, we're paying five to six bucks a beer, you know, and I'm like, there's a game out there that's 50, we're, we're paying eight to 10. Now, sure, now we are. You're a refined palate, but I'm just saying, like, I'm just saying, like, generally, I'm saying in general, you go to a ballgame, something like that, five, six bucks a beer. And yes, I agree.

You go to a ballgame? You're paying 15.

Okay, okay, John, John, stop with your inflation talk. All right, listen to me. 10 beers, 10 beers, 10 good beers.

And I'm drunk.

Is a video game, right? I mean, that's...

Okay, sure.

I mean, they've gone up like 70 bucks now too, but everything's going higher. It's, yeah, it's where we're at. But, but let's, let's say 10 beers. Let's say a 12 pack. Let's go with a 12 pack. And we're just gonna, we're just gonna say 12 pack. A 12 pack of good beer, you know, at, at, at a destination, not going and buying it, you know, from the liquor

store. Yeah, it's like 15 bucks.

Yeah, yeah. 12, 12, 12 pack or 12 beers going out, which is a lot of beer, is equal to a video game. Am I going to get that much hours out of it? Like, is that what's going to entertain me?

That would take me many hours to drink 12 beers.

It 100% would. It would take like, you know, like, you know,

Probably not 50 hours, though.

But I'm just saying it's, it's a lot. When you get, when you hit that 50 hour mark, that's a good game to me.

No, I know you're, this is William's point, our friend William, he has always pointed out that, yeah, a game cost 60, 70 bucks. If it's something that you enjoy, and that's the, that's the trick, you're getting just the, the per hour rate of entertainment is super low.

Like me, I am at 50 hour, I think I'm at 50 hours. And I can see going at least double that. I hope to just keep playing and playing.

Yeah, good.

Yeah, so that's, that's under a dollar an hour.

But that being said, though, too, this game is very special, or at least this company that makes this game is very special.

Well, that's why I'm very picky. I'm very picky with a couple of games.

You can get three to 400 hours out of this game and still be enjoying it, whereas other games you can't.

All right, let's talk, I got something I want to talk about. Three-body problem. Did you watch it?

That's not main. That's not main story. That's that's a side quest, but it determines the rest of how your universe is.

I'm trying to, I'm trying to remember the part that I, the last big part that I got to.

And I know for sure that I brought back a couple of the pieces or whatever of the thing.

And then I gained the power in a snow planet type situation.

And that where you float around the big circle, it's like you stars.

Yeah. Speaking of glitches, that glitched on me several times. I couldn't finish it.

I had no, no, no.

And that's one of the reasons that kind of frustrated me about the game is I was like, I did the exact same thing.

Like I kept going to it. I was like, I'm doing this right.

Yeah, I'm looking. I know I'm doing it right. I'm looking at YouTube.

YouTube is telling me I'm doing it right. And I'm still not getting it. Yeah. Agreed. Yeah.

But that's one of the few that I've encountered.

And it's incredibly frustrating.

Oh, yeah. So it is based on a series of books.

Is that really a problem?

I believe that this show's first season

is about halfway through the second book.

So we can probably expect two more seasons or one more season of this.

But I went in.

I don't know how to say that.

I read the first two or three chapters of the book,

and it's a translated book from a Chinese author.

And I just didn't it didn't catch me.

And I did this back whenever.

Yeah, I did this back whenever Netflix,

when I heard Netflix was going to be doing it.

And then Brad Pitt was associated with it.

And I was like, oh, this is going to be pretty good.

Like, you know, and I think I read like the first.

and I went on to something else.

It just didn't grab me.

It could be lost in translation, I get it.

I'm not knocking anything about it.

The show was amazing, though.

Absolutely amazing.

It started out in the... I don't know how to describe it.

I can recognize it when I see it.

It's designed to irritate me.

Here's a mystery.

And we're going to purposely not tell you things about it.

It's a mystery.

Why does this irritate you?

That's the whole premise of Lost.

One of my favorite shows of all time.

I immediately thought of Lost.

It's a storytelling problem.

If you're doing it in a way that I think you're doing it intentionally.

You're doing it just to piss me off.

Just to make a mystery.

Just to piss you off.

It's to build a mystery.

If characters are not speaking, they're not talking to each other in ways that they would.

They're withholding information in ways that make no sense to keep the mystery.

It ran the risk of going just too far that way.

And then it shifted.

That's when it got good to me.

I agree with the shift.

I definitely know that there was one episode where I was like,

wait a second, this is getting a lot better than I thought it would.

That being said, I'm really interested in your irritation of building.

I think we've talked about it on this podcast before.

The J.J. Abrams and the mystery box thing.

Why did this happen?

The whole first season of Lost was that.

It's very funny to me that you get irritated by it.

When something weird like seeing numbers in front of you is happening to a character.

And they don't immediately say, guys, I'm seeing numbers.

How is that possible?

How can I be seeing numbers in front of me?

I close my eyes.

I still see the numbers.

Why are they counting down?

No, they keep their mouth shut.

But then you start to figure out that other people see the numbers and then die.

Yeah, I would be like, okay, what is happening here, people?

I'm seeing these things.

The first second I saw.

I have aura migraines, so I see aura sometimes and I get a migraine.

If I ever saw anything that looked like a legible letter or number,

I would freak the hell out.

I mean 100% freak out.

You wouldn't keep a little journal and still see the numbers.

Guess I'll kill myself.

That was the part.

I think you're starting to get it now.

That was the part that just kept the mystery.

Okay, so there's two things to the numbers.

And we're giving away a little bit of spoilers.

We're not really giving away spoilers here.

This is like the first couple of episodes.

Number one, the cigarette thing,

person telling them that they can get rid of it, that kind of thing.

You had to have the numbers to have that.

So I get that part.

The second thing is to introduce Wong's character into the show.

You really have to have an invite to these people who are fairly brilliant people,

like working on brilliant problems.

You have to have his character have an intro,

and I think the numbers were the intro for his character.

But yeah, man.

Let me say this.

We're talking about literally the first hour of the show.

This show explodes with awesomeness.

I don't know how to describe it.

It goes to reaches that I never thought it was going to go to

when I first started watching it.

And then I'm just like, oh, my gosh.

This is amazing.

This is absolutely amazing.

And then the next episode, I'm like, this is even more amazing.

Go ahead.

I was just going to say, the one problem that I have with the show,

and I think, again, spoilers if you don't want to listen to it,

is the helmet things.

I don't understand them.

I don't understand how they get there.

understand how they're being made. I don't understand how they're from an alien civilization that's way far away. Like, how are they on Earth now? That was my biggest pet peeve with the show, personally. Yeah, because they're so far advanced tech, like they had to be built, they had to be created, they had to be made, like, even if somebody sent schematics from that far away, like, what, how are these things working? And that's, that was my only pet peeve with the show.

I guess I didn't think about that. My question, and this is full on spoilers. What was the most awesome, amazing moment in the series? And why was it the nanowire cutting the ship?

The nanowire cutting the ship? Like, I went back and actually, like, watched that, like, like, like, there's like a YouTube supercut or something of that. And I had to watch it to make sure I understand. That was a unbelievable scene, like, like that on on so many levels, so many levels. And this is a show that is tossing dried people into a pool and they're re-inflating. I mean, this is not like, this is like, like re-inflating naked. I mean, like, this is like, this is, you cannot describe this scene to anybody and do it justice.

You have to watch it. It is amazingly well done. And it is just like the, and to the, the, the, I don't know how to describe her, the titular character that this scene revolves around. You can see, like, she is a very good actress. Like, you can see on her face. She is one of the only people that understands what is about to happen.

And she, and she, and she's in it. She, she's in it. She knows she's in it and she has to do it. And it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, that's the best part of the show is that it's trade-off.

And it's, well, it's, it's actually a very elaborate high-tech trolley problem.

Yeah, it is. That's exactly what it is. That's a great, great analogy. It's a trap. Like, like, I have to destroy these people who are-

Including children.

Stop it. Stop it. The little, little kid, she, oh my gosh.

Yep.

I still think about it. Like, I like, oh my gosh. Yeah. You have to, you have to, you have to figure out the bargain. And, and I think that the writing is done in such a great way that it forces those characters, because they're so smart, because they're good at what they do, because they solve these amazing problems.

They are the only ones that can make that decision. And you see how it affects them. And I think that this show also did a really good job of seeing how it affects them. I mean, like, you, you see, like, what happens, like, after this scene, like, this person has a problem. Like, and I get it. Like, yeah, it's a very well-written show.

And then, like, I don't know how much was, was, was changed for the, the, the Netflix production of it. But it was Netflix was, or was it Apple? I can't remember.

That was-

It was Netflix. I think it was Netflix. Yeah. So I don't know how much was changed for the Netflix versus the translated book. But man, it's very good at getting to the heart of humanity, too.

Like, if something like this were to, and I'm not giving away anything, but if this were to happen to us, what links will people go through? And it's, it, man, it's good. It's good. It's good. Good show. Good show.

Well, the, so the only problem really is at the end, when after the, you know, sending the, the brain out fails.

He's on, you know, Mr. Guy's on his private jet.

Yeah.

And he gets a visit from the, the bad, you know, whatever, aliens. And they, there's a terrifying moment there at the end.

Right? Okay. That, that's kind of a problem. Because why wouldn't they just do that all the time?

100%.

Why wouldn't they just take the jet out?

Yep.

You know, just, just kill everybody.

And I, I have to admit to, like, I understand, and this is again, spoilers. I understand that we've translated from a three-body problem with the three planets. And how do we solve that? To the three people at the end who have all autonomous control of their thoughts and can't be brain scanned, pretty much. And they're now.

Oh, yeah. The, what are the wall facers?

Yeah. The wall, whatever they're called. The wall.

Yeah. Wall huggers.

Yeah. Wall huggers, whatever. Wall flowers. Yeah. So, so like, we've translated into those are the three bodies now. And that's the problem. Because the, the aliens can't infiltrate them because they control everything that's in their thoughts and they won't tell them.

Why wouldn't they just kill them?

Exactly. That's why, well, and they tried to with the assassin thing and all that kind of stuff. But, but like, yeah, I'm like, if they can do that to that guy on the plane, those guys have no chance.

Right.

Like, like, like, like, there's no, there's no.

They, they up the stakes so much. It's like, well, there's your.

Yes.

And I'd love to see if anybody's read the book, if that's how it is in the book. Because I, I can't imagine it is, but maybe I'm wrong. I feel like that was a little bit added for drama in the Netflix series.

But yeah, I don't know. Maybe, maybe not. Very well written. Very well written. I mean, like the whole Dark Forest part of it too. Like.

Yeah, like it's sound like I shouldn't say it's sound science because it sounds like I'm like a

professor or something but it's like it's it's definitely like one of those things where you're

like that makes total sense like the whole dark forest theory and all that kind of stuff I'm like

and then I enjoy the translation for the three bodies of the planets the people and it's good

it's good it's it's a great show highly highly recommend so that's it for this episode episode

be uh continuing on the same Clone Wars episodes we're looking at uh episodes 20 and 21 of season

3 of The Clone Wars but I think uh we got some junior novels coming up so we've got Roger Roger

which is Star Wars Adventures 19 we'll toss that guy in there and then we'll also let's go ahead

and look at uh episode 3 of Visions 2 are you good covering all that the same podcast a little

bit much but I think yeah I don't do junior novels so that'll be good so uh John thanks for joining
