The Ubese are a humanoid species in Star Wars, notable for their distinctive helmeted appearance and reputation as skilled mercenaries and bounty hunters. Originating from the Uba system, Ubese had to adapt to their planets' harsh climates, ranging from semi-desert to poisonous wasteland worlds, resulting in their characteristic cloaked and helmeted attire, which they wore to shield themselves from their environment and maintain their internal biological equilibrium. They had a distrustful and secretive nature, believed to have been caused by the devastation in their homeworld by Republic-generated bombardments, leading to their cultural tendency to hide their faces behind masks or helmets.
The language of the Ubese, known as Ubese language or Ubeninal, was a mixture of their original tongue and Basic, a language widely spoken in the galaxy. Their techno-organic weapons, combined with their skills in communicating through complex sign language, made them formidable opponents. They were distrusting towards others, particularly the Jedi, due to historical events on their home planet. Notable Ubese in Star Wars include Princess Leia, disguised as the Ubese bounty hunter Boushh in "Return of the Jedi," and Sugi, an Ubese bounty hunter appearing in the animated series "Star Wars: The Clone Wars."
