Sullustan

Species

The Sullustans are a species of humanoids from the Star Wars universe, first introduced in the 1983 film The Return of the Jedi. They originate from the galactic planet Sullust and are easily recognizable with their wide faces, large round eyes, and distinctive jowls. Their eyesight is exceptional, particularly in the darkness - an adaptation to the dark caverns of their homeworld. This species is well-known for their skill in astrogation and piloting, making Sullustans sought-after starship crew members.

The Sullustan society is largely based underground due to the rocky and harsh environment of their home planet, Sullust, which is plagued with volcanic activity. Their subterranean cities are shielded from the harsh exterior through giant plexiglass domes that also provide sunlight to the underground ecosystems. Residing underground for generations, Sullustans have created an intricate network of tunnels spanning the entirety of their planet.

Over time, Sullustans have evolved to thrive in their unique environment. Along with their enhanced night vision, they have developed an acute sense of direction. The cascading Echo-location calls bouncing off cavern walls drilled a natural sense of Echo-location into the species over time. This allows any Sullustan to record detailed 3D maps into their memory, a technique they call "smell-sight," and it contributes to their exceptional navigational skills in space.

The Sullustans played an integral role in the Rebel Alliance within the Star Wars universe, with their planet serving as a key navigation point. The most known Sullustan is Nien Nunb, who co-piloted the Millennium Falcon during the crucial Battle of Endor. His courage and superb piloting skills resulted in the destruction of the Death Star II, a pivotal event leading to the victory of the Rebellion.

the Sullustans are an intriguing and resourceful species in the Star Wars universe. Their exceptional navigational skills and adaptability to their harsh home planet's conditions reflect their resilience and spirit, making them a valuable ally in the expansive Star Wars galaxy.
