Mount Tantiss is a notable location situated in the Star Wars expanded universe on the planet Wayland. It was introduced as a foreboding fortress in the Thrawn Trilogy written by Timothy Zahn, specifically, in the first book, "Heir to the Empire" (1991). This complex served as a hidden storehouse and secret laboratory for Emperor Palpatine, housing artifacts, technology, and even secret projects that played significant roles in the Star Wars saga.
The fortress within Mount Tantiss was built by a species known as the Myneyrshi. The Myneyrshi were a war-like species and their constructions were known for their colossal scale and sturdy build. Emperor Palpatine acquired the fortress after defeating the Myneyrshi. Though heavily guarded by the Imperial forces, the fortress was not entirely reliant on manpower for security; it was also equipped with an intricate network of traps and barriers to deter intruders.
Inside the grand complex were countless treasures of the Galactic Empire. It housed weapons, droids, clone-making apparatus, a vast array of artifacts and what many considered the primary gem: the Spaarti Cloning Cylinders. These cylinders were part of an emergency plan by the Emperor to maintain an army, even after the destruction of the Death Star.
One of the core secrets of Mount Tantiss was a clone of the Jedi Master Jorus C'baoth. The clone was created to serve and guide the Emperor’s clone army. However, in the aftermath of Palpatine’s fall and the rise of the New Republic, the clone went rogue and renamed itself as Joruus C'baoth, assuming control over the remnants of the Galactic Empire on Wayland.
Mount Tantiss played a critical role in the Thrawn Trilogy as the stage for the final confrontation between the New Republic forces and the remaining Imperial forces, led by the strategic genius Grand Admiral Thrawn. Through the efforts of Luke Skywalker, Mara Jade, and their allies, the fortress was ultimately destroyed, putting an end to the threats concealed within its walls.
