Mortis

The Mortis, also known as Mortis realm, is a mysterious location in the Star Wars universe. It exists on a completely different plane and appears as a massive monolith floating in space. Mortis is widely renowned as a conduit of The Force and exists outside the normal dimensions of the Star Wars universe. Importantly, it is an ethereal realm steeped in the mythology of the Force itself, combining both the light and dark sides, and is wracked with dwelling mystical entities, personifying these aspects.

According to Star Wars lore, Mortis is populated by three powerful beings that embody different aspects of the Force. There is the Father, who maintains the balance between his two children, the Daughter who embodies the light side of the Force, and the Son who embodies the dark side. These entities, often referred to as "the Ones", are neither Sith nor Jedi but are immortal, extraordinarily powerful beings tied to the very essence of the Force itself.

The realm is seen in the "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" animated series when Jedi Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka Tano are drawn into its domain. Once inside Mortis, they confront the physical embodiments of both the light and dark side of the Force. Their experience in the realm profoundly affects their lives and indicates Anakin’s inevitable rise as the Sith Lord, Darth Vader.

The design of Mortis represents an ethereal realm with fluctuating day-night cycles. For instance, when the Son, the embodiment of the dark side, gains strength, night falls; conversely, as the Daughter, the embodiment of the light, takes an upper hand, the realm brightens with daylight. This symbolism represents the continuous and eternal battle between the two sides of the Force.

Various locations within Mortis are symbolic of the characters visiting it. The Daughter’s cathedral symbolizes rebirth or life, the Son’s tower represents death and darkness, while the Father’s monastery stands for balance and order. These symbols add depth to the understanding of the Force and its intricate relationship with all life forms in the galaxy.

The concept of Mortis and "the Ones" has had a significant influence on Star Wars mythology, largely symbolizing the “chosen one” prophecy. It showcases Anakin's Destiny to bring balance to the Force, depicting his internal struggle as both the potential saviour and destroyer of this balance. Mortis stands as a manifestation of the Force's mystery, providing audiences with a deeper, metaphysical exploration of the Star Wars universe.
