Dr. Pershing

Characters

Dr. Pershing is a character in the Star Wars series, introduced in "The Mandalorian," the hugely popular Disney++ show. Played by actor Omid Abtahi, he is a doctor in the employ of the Empire's remnants, specifically working for the character known as "The Client" who takes orders from Moff Gideon. His role within the series primarily revolves around the character of "The Child," colloquially known as Baby Yoda.

Pershing is distinguishable by his appearance: he is a human male with glasses and the uniform of an Imperial scientist, most noticeably featuring an insignia that indicates a connection to Kamino, the planet where clone troopers were created in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. This hints at the possibility that he might be involved in some form of cloning or genetic science. This was later verified when it was revealed that Dr. Pershing was charged with studying and extracting material from The Child at his lab.

Upon deeper exploration in the series, Dr. Pershing's character appears more nuanced than many other Imperials. Clear hints suggest that he may not be entirely comfortable with the harsh methods of his superiors. In fact, several times throughout the series, Dr. Pershing objects to procedures that would potentially harm The Child, indicating a degree of empathy and ethics uncommon within the ranks of the Empire.

Despite this, it's clear that Dr. Pershing is also driven by his scientific curiosity. The mystery of The Child's species and the potential power of its blood clearly captivates him. While his aim does not seem to be inherently malicious, his willingness to permit the potential harm of such an innocent for the sake of discovery places him in a morally grey area.

Dr. Pershing's character is significant within the Star Wars universe because it highlights some of the ethical complications and moral dilemmas embedded in the intermingling of science and power. Even as his character adds depth and complexity to "The Mandalorian," it also sheds light on the broader themes of the Star Wars saga.
