Defel are a sentient species in the Star Wars universe, first introduced in Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game by West End Games in 1987. They originate from the primitive planet Af'El, a world deprived of sunlight that's covered in dense, rocky spires and foggy oceans. This species is a humanoid in appearance, but are short, stocky and covered in fur. They are commonly known as "Wraiths" due to their unique ability to absorb light in the visual spectrum, thereby appearing as mere shadows to most other species.
Physiologically, Defels have evolved to survive in their unique environment. Their eyes have adapted to see in the ultraviolet spectrum, making them devoid of pupils or irises to the view of most species. They have sharp claws, which along with their stealthy nature, make them formidable hunters. The strength of a Defel's claws allows them to efficiently climb even sheer surfaces, giving them excellent mobility in their rocky habitat.
The Defel are a reclusive species, primarily due to the uninviting conditions of their homeworld. Despite their harsh terrain, a number of Defel have tried their luck off-world, often seeking work as trackers, assassins or spies in galactic criminal organizations. This is due to their stealthy abilities and sharp senses - particularly their vision, which makes them highly effective in these roles.
Another interesting aspect about the Defel is their cultural practice. They have a tribal society with a polytheistic belief system, centered around a pantheon of gods which embody various natural phenomena. This religious belief reflects their deep connection with their harsh environment and ties into the survivalist lifestyle they are forced to lead on their home planet.
Throughout the Star Wars franchise, Defels have made sporadic appearances, with the most notable being Arleil Schous, a Defel who appeared briefly in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Though they are not a focal species in the Star Wars universe, their occasional sightings and unique adaptations make them an interesting footnote in the galaxy’s broad spectrum of life forms.
