J-6 - often written colloquially as “Jaysix” - is a refurbished RA-7 Protocol Droid who co-stars in the junior-reader series “Star Wars: Adventures in Wild Space” (2016-2017) by Cavan Scott and Tom Huddleston, a body of work that is part of current Disney+-era canon. Originally assigned to the explorers Auric and Rhyssa Graf, J-6 falls into the care of their children Lina and Milo after the parents are kidnapped by Imperial forces. Alongside the astromech CR-8R (“Crater”), J-6 helps the siblings pilot their ship, the Whisper Bird, and acts as translator, mission planner, and reluctant nanny as the young heroes trek across the Outer Rim in search of their family. The droid’s RA-7 chassis - familiar from the “Death Star droid” seen in A New Hope - comes with upgraded vocabulator banks and expanded data files on galactic etiquette, making J-6 both a walking encyclopedia and a stickler for protocol.
Personality-wise, J-6 blends dry sarcasm with an unshakable sense of duty. The droid routinely scolds the Graf kids for improvising plans, yet never hesitates to step between them and danger - whether that means slicing Imperial security doors in “The Escape,” negotiating with Jablogian pirates in “The Steal,” or piloting through a swarm of Purrgil in “The Rescue.” This combination of prim manners and genuine affection turns J-6 into the emotional ballast of the crew and provides much of the series’ humor. Although the character has not migrated to film or television, J-6’s repeated appearances in print (and a brief cameo in IDW’s “Star Wars Adventures” comics starring Emil Graf, a later descendant) cement the droid as a small but memorable part of the modern canon, illustrating how even side-character droids can anchor long-form storytelling in the Star Wars galaxy.
