The Honor Guard, or the Red Guard, is a significant aspect of the Star Wars universe, having been introduced in the Star Wars franchise Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. The Honor Guard, also known as the Emperor's Royal Guard or Imperial Royal Guard, is an elite unit of the Galactic Empire's armed forces tasked with the duty of protecting the Emperor. They are recognized by their distinctive crimson robes and helmets, and they carry force pikes as their main weapon. Selected from the best and most loyal soldiers in the Empire, these guards are skilled in hand-to-hand combat and possess unwavering loyalty to the Emperor.

The creation of the Honor Guard can be credited to Emperor Palpatine as part of his efforts in establishing the Galactic Empire. These guards were initially enlisted from the ranks of the Senate Guard, following their disbandment. This transition signaled a shift from the democratic order of the Galactic Republic to Emperor Palpatine's dictatorial rule. The individuals selected to become part of the Honor Guard underwent rigorous combat and tactical training, making them formidable forces within the Empire.

Throughout the entire period of the Galactic Empire's reign, the Honor Guard remained by Emperor Palpatine's side. They were positioned within the Emperor's vicinity in the Imperial Palace, with their stark appearance playing a symbolic role in his rule. The Red Guards often moved in pairs to ensure optimal protection.

On top of their duty in maintaining the Emperor's safety, the Red Guard was entrusted with various secret tasks. This includes maintaining Palpatine's collection of Sith artifacts and carrying out political assassinations. Their order maintained its existence even after the Emperor's death, with remnants carrying on their duty in guarding the Emperor's clones.

In Star Wars literature outside of the main film series, the Honor Guard's history and duties have been expanded upon. They've been depicted as having a more complex and varied role within the Star Wars universe, extending their influence across the galaxy and serving in various capacities.
