Ghosts of Mortis

The Clone Wars Episodes

The Ghosts of Mortis, also known as "The Mortis Trilogy," are a trio of episodes (Overlords, Altar of Mortis, and Ghosts of Mortis) from the third season of the animated television series Star Wars: The Clone Wars. These episodes primarily take place on the ethereal realm of Mortis, a mystical plane within the Star Wars universe inhabited by a trio of immensely powerful, Force-wielding beings known as The Ones.

Mortis is a different manifestation of reality, a realm of The Force. It's unlike anywhere else in the Star Wars galaxy and is believed to be a conduit through which the entire Force of the universe flows. The Ones are made up of the Father, who strives to maintain a balance between his children, the Daughter who embodies the light side of The Force and the Son who represents the dark side.

In "Overlords," Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka Tano are drawn into Mortis, where they meet The Ones. The Father reveals that he brought Anakin there to confirm if he indeed is the prophesied Chosen One, who will bring balance to the Force. Anakin accomplishes a task that proves he is the Chosen One, but he rejects the Father's plea to stay and keep his children in check.

"Altar of Mortis" sees the situation within Mortis turning sour as the Son coerces Ahsoka into aiding him in his bid for power. The episode ends in a tragedy that befalls the Daughter, which starkly disturbs the balance in the Force within Mortis. The final episode, "Ghosts of Mortis," details Anakin's premonition about his dark future, an insight that the Son uses in an attempt to sway him to the dark side.

The 'Mortis Trilogy' is considered one of the most philosophical and abstract story arcs in Star Wars lore, delving deeper into the nature of the Force and its connection to life, death, love, and altruism. Not only does it offer a metaphysical aspect to the series, but it also provides profound insight into Anakin's internal struggle, ultimately foreshadowing his transformation into Darth Vader.

All in all, these unfortunately named "Ghosts of Mortis" don't entail typical ‘ghosts’ as one might think, but rather supernatural avatars of good and evil and figures of immense power that exist outside the corporeal plane. They present a deeper understanding of the Force and its balance, adding a profound richness to the overarching Star Wars narrative.
