Deathstick

Illicit Substances

The Deathstick is a highly addictive and illicit substance that exists within the Star Wars universe. Originating from the Underworld of the city-planet Coruscant, commonly seen in various spaceports and cantinas across the galaxy, Deathsticks tread on the dark side of the Star Wars mythos dealing with the shadier aspect of life in a galaxy far, far away. It showcases the existence of illegal drug trafficking and substance abuse across varied Star Wars societies.

The Star Wars Deathstick was introduced in the 'Episode II – Attack of the Clones' during a scene set in the Outlander Club, which is located in the entertainment district of Coruscant. The drug is commonly sold in red or yellow-colored vials and, when ingested, alters the user's mental state, inducing hallucinations and potentially leading to a formidable addiction.

The substance comes in two forms: liquid and a version that can be smoked. Both have the distinct psychedelic and hallucinogenic effects but come with serious risks. It has the capacity to shorten the lifespan of its user while deteriorating their cognitive functioning over time. Even using it once can make someone crave for more, underlining its highly addictive properties.

The creation of Deathsticks includes a unique ingredient: the balo mushroom, grown on the planet of Balosar. In its original unprocessed form, this mushroom can induce mild giddiness. But through a process involving various chemical treatments, it is transformed into the potent form found in Deathsticks.

It’s not just the existence of Deathsticks that reveals the darker side of Star Wars societies. The peddlers and marketers of this illicit substance have also been portrayed. Elan Sel'Sabagno, an infamous Balosar Deathstick dealer seen in 'Attack of the Clones', tirelessly pitches his addictive product until he's discouraged by Obi-Wan Kenobi's Jedi mind trick.

while the Star Wars universe showcases the epic battles between light and dark, it also subtly highlights social evils like drug trafficking and substance abuse. The Deathstick serves to emphasize the grim and gritty realities that also exist amidst the fantastical elements in this space opera megasaga.
