Janus Kasmir was an individual who lived during the period of the Galactic Empire's rigorous rule over the Galaxy. As a Kalleran, Kasmir was a native of the planet Kaller. However, as a con artist and smuggler, he lived a nomadic life of high-risk crimes and Interstellar transactions. Kasmir was known for his somewhat rough and self-serving demeanor, which, however, hid a deeper integrity.
During his smuggling escapades, Kasmir acquired a keen understanding of the Galaxy's black markets and an acute sense of survival. His resourcefulness and quick thinking often saved him from dangerous situations. He owned a freighter, Kasmiri, which was often used in his underground dealings. Despite being a crook, Janus believed in not hurting innocent people for personal gain, showcasing a unique sense of honor.
In the following years, Kasmir had a significant role in the life of a young Caleb Dume, who would later adopt the name Kanan Jarrus. At the time, the adolescent Dume was on the run from the Empire after Order 66, the law which led to the extermination of Jedi Knights throughout the galaxy. The young Force-sensitive human sought refuge with Kasmir, who taught him to manage without using his Force abilities and the value of self-reliance.
Janus Kasmir became instrumental in Dume’s transition from a Jedi Padawan to a resilient survivor. It was Kasmir's spirit of independence and survival that ultimately molded Dume's future identity as Kanan Jarrus. Despite his initial resistance, Kasmir formed a bond with Dume, even saving him from the Empire's clutches on several occasions.
However, Kasmir's association with Dume did come with its share of threats. His involvement with the Jedi Padawan eventually led to his capture by General Kleeve and his henchmen. Nevertheless, he managed to escape, due in large part to assistance from the very apprentice he had initially sought to distance himself from, furthering their bond of friendship.
Janus Kasmir, though initially a self-serving smuggler and con artist, proved to be an ally and mentor to Kanan Jarrus, ultimately aiding him in evading the Empire and surviving during those tumultuous times.
