The Dark Trooper is a formidable menace in the Star Wars universe, first appearing in the 1995 video game, Star Wars: Dark Forces. Rather than flesh-and-blood entities, they are a series of advanced combat droids, designed with the sole purpose of fighting and intending to bridge the gap between stormtroopers and the Empire's war machines.
Dark Troopers came in different phases with each phase representing a more technologically advanced version of the previous. They were developed under the Empire's Dark Trooper Project, headed by General Rom Mohc. Phase I Dark Troopers were more of exoskeletons than droids, usually operated by organic pilots. They were fairly skeletal, had limited weaponry, and were primarily used for base security.
Phase II dark troopers were fully droid/mech-like and were a significant improvement compared to phase I. They were armed with a variety of formidable tools, the most prominent of which was the assault cannon mounted on the right arm. Phase III, the final stage of a dark trooper, was the most robust and lethal. These troopers stood around three meters tall and were essentially walking tanks. They were engineered to be faster, stronger, and far more resilient than any organic soldier. Their armament included an impressive arsenal of heavy weapons.
Though the dark trooper project was largely considered a success, it was fundamentally ended by the Rebel Alliance thanks to Kyle Katarn, the protagonist of the Dark Forces game series. Katarn infiltrated the Empire's facilities and destroyed the ongoing production of these menacing droids.
Interestingly, the Dark Troopers have recently resurfaced in the Star Wars universe through their inclusion in The Mandalorian, a popular TV series on Disney++. This resurgence has reignited interest in these powerful droids, allowing a new generation of Star Wars fans to witness their power and menace. Their menacing design and formidable abilities continue to make the Dark Trooper one of the most feared entities in the Star Wars universe.
