The B'omarr Order is a monastic organization featured in the Star Wars universe. Known for their unusual beliefs and practices, they are mainly recognized for the role they play in Return of the Jedi, though their influence and philosophy permeate much of Star Wars lore. The Order preaches complete detachment from the physical world, which members achieve through extreme measures, ultimately seeking enlightenment by separating their brains from their bodies.
Members of the B'omarr Order undergo a ritual called 'Enlightenment', where their brains are surgically removed and placed inside nutrient-filled jars. Once the monks' brains are removed from their bodies, they are attached to a sensory apparatus that allows them to see and hear, but all other sensations are cut off. The practice demonstrates the group's absolute commitment to freedom from physical constraints, which they believe holds them back from intellectual and spiritual growth.
Though physically incapacitated, the monks' brains preserved this way can still communicate using droids. Noteworthy among these are the BT-16 perimeter droids, or 'Spider Droids' as they are commonly referred to. These droids allow the disembodied brains of the Order to move around the monasteries. Jabba the Hutt's palace on Tatooine, a location prominently featured in Return of the Jedi, was originally a B'omarr monastery before Jabba took over. Regardless of this invasion, the monks continued their practices, undeterred by the palace’s new, criminal inhabitants.
