Yellow lightsabers are a distinctive type of lightsaber within the Star Wars universe, known for their unique hue and the specific group of individuals who typically wield them. Unlike other lightsaber colors like blue and green, which are commonly used by Jedi Knights, and red, the color of the Sith, yellow lightsabers are often associated with the Jedi's Sentinel class, especially Jedi temple Guards.
The yellow lightsaber is not something that is frequently seen in the main Star Wars storylines, but it appears prominently in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels television series. The Jedi Sentinels who bear these distinct weapons represent a balance between the more combat-focused Jedi Guardians (characterized by blue lightsabers) and the more scholarly Consulars (who utilize green lightsabers).
Star Wars lore dictates the color of a lightsaber depends on the Kyber crystal in the heart of the device. Crystals are colorless until they are found by a Jedi Knight who then infuses their will via The Force into the crystal, which results in the color. As such, a yellow lightsaber is supposed to denote a Jedi Sentinel's focus on practical knowledge and a balanced approach between physical combat and scholarly pursuits.
An intriguing enhancement of the yellow lightsaber mythos occurred with "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker", where the character of Rey is seen with a yellow lightsaber at the end of the movie. As Rey represents a sort of new age for the Jedi, her wielding a yellow lightsaber could potentially indicate a shift in the philosophy or practices of Jedi in future storylines.
It's also worth noting that the yellow lightsaber possesses a bit of real-world symbolism as well. Coincidentally or not, the color yellow is often associated with wisdom and knowledge, which accurately represents the Jedi Sentinel's focus on skills outside of pure combat. The choice of yellow might have been an intentional nod towards this real-world symbolism.
Even though the yellow lightsaber remains less common in the Star Wars universe than its green, blue, or red counterparts, its unique color and association with a specific group within the Jedi Order makes it fascinating to fans and a critical part of Star Wars lore.
