Tobias Beckett is a fictional character from the Star Wars franchise, portrayed by actor Woody Harrelson. Beckett makes his first appearance in "Solo: A Star Wars Story" as an experienced thief, career criminal, and skilled gunslinger. He ultimately acts as a mentor figure to a young Han Solo, teaching him many of the skills that would later make Solo a legendary smuggler and hero.
Beckett is a pragmatic individual, uninterested in political struggles and focused mainly on his own survival and prosperity. He lives by a clear philosophy that anyone potentially could betray you for their own gain, and advises Solo to trust no one. He is shown to be talented in a number of illegal professions, including theft, smuggling, and forgery.
Despite his rough exterior and cynical worldview, Beckett exhibits a softer side, particularly in his relationship with his co-conspirator and lover, Val. It is clearly shown in the movie that her death deeply affects him. Moreover, in spite of his prediction of betrayal, Beckett somewhat paradoxically does form an emotional connection to Solo.
However, living by his own wisdom, Beckett eventually double-crosses Han Solo after being blackmailed by the movie's main antagonist, Dryden Vos. In the end, Beckett tries to run away with the fortunate coaxium but is confronted by Han. The final standoff combines both tragedy and instructive moments - Beckett's death teaches Han a lesson about survivorhood in their dangerous line of work.
Tobias Beckett leaves a defining mark not only on Han’s life but also on Star Wars as a narrative. Aside from whatever transgressions he commits, Beckett contributes to Han Solo's growth as both a stylish gunfighter and a suspicious survivor. He is a complex character that blends characteristics of treachery and mentorship, deepening the universe that Star Wars continues to build.
