Peridea

The Peridea is a Star Wars creature that is essentially a large insect, specifically a moth, that hails from the planet of Naboo. They inhabit the verdant and aquatic regions of the planet, especially the swamp areas. Known for their vibrant markings and large size, these creatures fly under the cover of night, which makes spotting them an incredibly breathtaking sight due to their bioluminescence.

Newborn Peridea are known as hatchlings. When the hatchlings mature, they sprout wings and migrate to the vegetation-rich regions of Naboo. During this period, their diets mainly consist of leaves which contribute significantly to their development and growth process. The fully-grown Peridea possess bright luminescent lights on their bodies, an evolutionary adaptation that possibly serves in attracting potential mates and repelling predators.

In terms of cinematic appearances in the Star Wars franchise, the Peridea is seen in the Star Wars: The Phantom Menace film during a scene that depicts the lush swamps of Naboo. Despite the brief and less significant appearance, the Peridea is notable for contributing to the rich and diverse fauna that characterizes the Star Wars universe.

From a behind-the-scenes perspective, the creation of the Peridea was supervised by Terryl Whitlatch, a noted creature concept designer for the Star Wars prequel trilogy. The creature's design adheres to biomechanical principles which further add to the biological believability and immersion of the Star Wars universe. The glow effect of the Peridea was later added using computer-generated graphics in post-production.
